From time to time the athletic training staff may be unavailable to aid injured athletes when their injuries occur. This page is intended to be a resource for those times. Below are a few links to some handouts which may aid after an injury, however it is important to note that this page is not intended to take the place of actual treatment. Only the athletic trainer or other qualified medical personnel can offer true service following an injury, these are merely a supplemental tools.
General Stretching and Flexibility Exercises
Guidelines for Swelling Control
Guidelines for Icing
In general, after most injuries a period of acute
inflammation will follow. During this time it is important to control/reduce swelling, maintain flexibility and range of motion, and reduce pain. Rest, icing, compression, elevation, use of OTC's like acetaminophen (Tylenol), and ibuprofen (Advil), as well as light stretching and
exercising can help in this process. Reading and following the
guidelines above can help in this process. Remember, DON'T BE A HERO!!! If you need treatment get it. See the athletic trainer or your doctor, because serious damage can result if tissues are left untreated.
