Sophomore Season summary...
Streak sophs post .500 record
5/13 - (CANTON) In a GHS baseball season with more "downs" than "ups", Coach Jake Miller's sophomore Streaks were a bright spot, finishing the campaign strong to end up 14-14. They completed their request for .500, Tuesday, with a 10-5 victory at Canton.
    Freshman Dalton Davis picked up the pitching victory, going four innings. Steven Joseph tossed the final three innings to preserve the win. Nate Olin led the Streaks at the plate with three hits against the Little Giants.
GHS sophomores slip by Geneseo
5/12 - (GENESEO) Derek Schwab's two-out two-run single in the seventh inning lifted GHS' sophomore baseball team to a 5-4 victory at Geneseo, Monday.
    With the win, the Streak sophs improved their season record to 13-14. They will travel to Canton, Tuesday, in hope of reaching the .500 mark.
    Geneseo took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Streak starting pitcher Nate Olin, but he settled down, allowing only two more runs the rest of the way.
    With the GHS down 4-3 going into the top of the seventh, a two-out balk put our runners on second and third for pinch-hitter Schwab. His single brought in both the tying and eventual winning runs.
    There were some anxious moments in the bottom of the seventh as Jake Taylor came on in relief to try to close out the game for the Streaks. Unfortunately, he gave up a leadoff double, a single and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Taylor then struck out the next batter, got the fifth batter of the inning pop out to second base and then, on a full count, struck out the last batter looking to seal the victory and earn the save.
    Andrew Steck and Bo Merrit had two hits to lead the Streaks' offense.
Streak sophs rally past East Peoria
5/9 - Tyler Garza tripled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead the GHS sophomore baseball team to an exciting 10-8 victory over East Peoria, here Friday.
    With the win, the Streaks sophs improved their season record to 12-14. They will travel to Geneseo Monday for another non-conference contest.
    Derek Schwab started the game on the mound for the Streaks and held East Peoria scoreless through the first three innings.
    The visiting Raiders plated a solo run in the fourth to cut their deficit to 3-1 and then took the lead in the top of the fifth with four runs. They would eventually trail 10-5, heading into the seventh inning. A homerun by Bryce Colvin and two more runs made it interesting, but in the end GHS' sophs survived for the win.
     Mark Zhorne picked up the pitching victory in relief, while Nate Olin threw one pitch to record the final out of the game.

     In addition to Garza's big blow, the Streaks got two hits from Zhorne. He also scored three runs. Jake Taylor had a triple and Andrew Steck, Nick Milligan, Olin and Jared Scott had one hit apiece.
Rock Island slips by Streak sophs
5/8 - (ROCK ISLAND) GHS' sophomore baseball team was competitive, but came up just short at Rock Island Thursday. The Rocks dodged a bases-loaded jam in the final inning to win 4-3 over the Streaks.
    Freshman Nick Milligan took the tough pitching loss. He struck out 11, while walking four and scattering six hits.
    GHS' sophs led 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth when two fielding errors led to a two-out bloop single that scored two runs. The Rocks added what proved to be the deciding run against reliever Mark Zhorne and took a 4-2 lead into the seventh. Tyler Garza drove in one run in the Streaks' final at bat to cut the deficit to one, but Rocky was able to dodge the bullet with a pop-out to end the contest.
    Leading the GHS offense was Jake Henderson with three hits and Garza with two.
    The Streak sophs will host east Peoria Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Moline sweeps past Streak sophs
5/3 - (MOLINE) GHS' sophomore baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday at Moline. The Maroons topped the young Streaks 11-6 and 9-3.
    With the twin losses, the GHS sophs finish the 2008 Western Big 6 campaign 3-7. They fell to 11-13 on the season.
    The first game saw the Streaks rally to score five runs in the sixth inning to cut their deficit to 8-6. A three-run homer for Moline in the bottom of the frame put things out of the reach. Freshman Nick Milligan took the pitching loss. Mark Zhorne led the Streaks at the plate in the opening game.
    The second game saw Steven Joseph make a last-minute start. He a respectable job, but got some shaky defensive support. Jared Scott and Bo Merritt both hit homeruns, but that wasn't enough. Zhorne also had strong game at the plate.
    Next up for the GHS sophs will be a non-conference game at Rock Island on Thursday.
GHS sophomores sweep season series
5/1 - With a 7-2 non-conference win over United Township, Thursday, the GHS sophomore baseball team completed a three-game season sweep of the young Panthers.
    Bo Merritt led the Streak attack with a two-for-effort that included a double and a homerun. Jake Henderson broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run bases loaded double. From that point on, the Streaks never looked back.
    Jake Taylor started on the mound for GHS, but B.J. Buzick picked up the pitching victory in relief.
    With the win, the Streak sophomores moved to 11-11 on the season.
Streak sophs rally past Richwoods
4/30 - (PEORIA) GHS' sophomore baseball team scored five runs in the seventh inning to edge Richwoods 11-10, Wednesday night.
    Nate Olin picked up the pitching victory as the Streaks got a clutch two-out bases loaded single from Dalton Davis to tie the score. He then executed a perfect delayed steal to score Andrew Steck with what turned out to be winning run.
    Mark Zhorne and Davis both had multiple hits and RBI's. Steck and Olin both added triples and Bo Merritt collected two hits, including one that barely missed clearing the fence.
    With the win, the Streak sophs moved to 10-11 on the season. They will try to reach the .500 mark Thursday when they take on United Township at home in a non-conference match-up.
Streaks sophomores fall in 8 innings
4/29 - Moline scored a solo run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to get past the GHS sophomore baseball team 4-3, here Tuesday.
    The Streaks out-hit the Maroons in the contest 9 to 4, but could only manage one run in the
first, third and fifth innings. Moline plated three in the fourth.
    Steven Joseph took the pitching loss for the GHS sophs as Moline's lead off man reached in the eighth and stole second. A sacrifice bunt put him on third and the next batter drove a deep fly to center to score the run.
    The Streaks' Jake Henderson had a big day at the plate, collecting four hits. He also scored a run. Dalton Davis scored the Streaks first run on a sacrifice fly by Nate Olin. Henderson led off the third with a single and eventually scored on Tyler Garza's sacrifice.
    The final Streak run came in the fifth when a Moline fielding error set the stage for Mark Zhorne's RBI double.

    Wednesday, the Streak sophomores, now 9-11 on the season, will travel to Peoria Richwoods for a 7 p.m. contest.
Streak sophomores split with Quincy
4/26 - After thumping Quincy 12-0 in the five innings in the opener Saturday, there were high hopes for the GHS sophomore baseball team might sweep their second consecutive Western Big 6
double. However, the young Streaks didn't seal the deal as they fell to the Blue Devils 10-8 in the nightcap.
    With the split, the Streaks sophs moved to 3-5 in league play and 9-10 overall.
    In game one, the first nine players to go to the plate for GHS scored as they took a commanding lead that would eventually become a mercy rule victory. The Streaks added three more runs in the second inning and then coasted to the five-inning win.
    Tyler Garza and Nate Olin led the charge for the Streaks with two hits apiece. Quincy surrendered seven walks in the contest. Dalton Davis, Andrew Steck, Derek Schwab, Bo Merritt and Milligan also had hits. The first five GHS batters all walked.

    In the nightcap, the contest was throughout. GHS led 6-4 going into the fifth inning. In that frame, however, the Blue Devils plated four runs to take a lead they would never relinquish. GHS scored solo runs in the sixth and seventh, but two more runs for Quincy in the top of seventh proved decisive.
    Jared Scott and Jake Henderson had two hits apiece to lead the Streaks. Olin, Schwab and Zack Dixon had one hit each.
    Monday, the Streak sophs will travel with the varsity to Geneseo for non-conference games.
GHS sophs earn league victories
4/19 - (EAST MOLINE) They did not come easy, by coach Jake Miller's GHS sophomore baseball team finally broke into the win column in Western Big 6 play, Saturday. The young Streaks edged United Township 2-0 and 4-1.
    With the sweep, GHS' sophs moved their conference record to 2-4 and overall mark to 8-8.
    In the opener, Nate Olin and Steven Joseph combined for the shutout. Olin went five innings and Joseph pitched the final two for a save. Hits were at a premium, but Tyler Garza and Andrew Steck led a Streak offense that managed enough for the victory.
    In the second game, U.T. took an early 1-0 lead, but after that GHS' sophs closed the door and scored some runs of their own. Bo Merritt was three-for-four at the plate and Nick Milligan came through with a big pinch-hit RBI double in the sixth. Jared Scott got the Streak scoring going in the fourth with a double.
    Mark Zhorne went the distance on the mound for the pitching victory. He allowed five hits and struck out six.
    Tuesday, the GHS sophs will travel to Washington for a non-conference test.
GHS sophs win in final at bat
4/17 - Andrew Steck drove in two runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh to give GHS' sophomore baseball team a 3-2 victory over Washington, here Thursday.
    With the non-conference win, the Streaks improved their season record to 6-8.
  hhttp;  Washington scored a single run in the top of the first inning and held that one-run lead until GHS tied the score in the sixth. Steck led off with a single and eventually scored. The visitors regained the lead with another run in the top of the seventh, but Steck's clutch hit rallied the Streaks back for the win.
    B.J. Buzick started and pitched well for the winners, but Steck earned the save in relief. Steck also led the GHS hitting attack with three hits in four trips to the plate. Nick Milligan, Derek Schwab and Zack Dixon also had hits.
    Washington out-hit the Streaks 8 to 6, but could only muster two runs.
    Next up for the Streak sophs will be Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader at United Township.
Sophs stay winless in conference
4/16 - GHS' sophomhore baseball team dropped both ends of a Western Big 6 doubleheader with Alleman, here Wednesday. The Pioneers took the opener 12-10 and the nightcap, 9-5.
    With the losses, the young Streaks fell to 0-4 in league play and 5-8, overall. In the opener, GHS took a 7-3 lead into the top of the fifth inning and then surrendered seven runs to fall behind and they trailed the rest of the way.
    Starting pitcher Nick Milligan took the loss. He allowed eight runs in four-plus innings. Steven Joseph finished the contest, allowing four more runs.
    The most telling statistic in the first game was the Streaks' eight fielding errors. Offensively, they took advantage of four Alleman errors and scored 10 runs on seven hits. Andrew Steck had two hits to lead the way. Dalton Davis, Jake Henderson, Nate Olin, Tyler Garza and Joseph had one apiece.
    GHS fell behind 7-1 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to two runs. Unfortunately, Alleman came right back with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, putting the game out of reach.
    Derek Schwab suffered the pitching loss. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits. Olin pitched the seventh and allowed two runs on one hit. Errors again hurt the Streaks' cause as they committed four.
    GHS out-hit the Pioneers in the nightcap, but stranded too many baserunners. Davis, Steck, Schwab and Milligan had two hits apiece. Olin, Henderson, Garza and Jared Scott had one apiece.
    The Streak sophs will try to get back on track Thursday when they host Washington in a 4:30 p.m. contest.
Streak sophomores dump Dunlap
4/15 - GHS' sophomore baseball team returned to action, Tuesday, after multiple rain-outs and looked sharp in a 10-0, five-inning victory over Dunlap.
    The young Streaks improved their season record to 5-6 with the win.
    Mark Zhorne went the distance for the pitching victory. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out one. His teammates turned a pair of double-plays to support the effort.
    Dunlap committed six fielding errors and surrendered 10 hits to the Streaks in the contest. GHS scored three in the first inning, six in the second and one more in the fourth for their 10-run total.
    Zhorne and Tyler Garza led the way with two hits apiece. Dalton Davis, Nate Olin, Derek Schwab, Jake Henderson, Andrew Steck and Steven Joseph had one hit each.
    Wednesday, the Streak sophs will make-up their conference doubleheader with Alleman at Sundberg Field. The first game will start at 4 p.m.
GHS sophomores lose in extra innings
4/7 - (MOLINE) GHS' sophomore baseball team lost to Alleman 7-6 in nine innings, Monday.
    Derek Schwab had two doubles and Nick Milligan another to lead the Streaks. Dalton Davis took the pitching loss in relief.
    With the loss, the GHS sophs fell to 4-6 on the season. They are scheduled to host Pekin on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Rock Island sweeps Streak sophs
4/5 - GHS' sophomore baseball team dropped a pair of games to Rock Island, here Saturday, to fall to 0-2 in conference play and 4-5, overall.
    Rock won the first game 7-3 and took a pitchers' duel in the nightcap 2-1.
    In the opener, Nate Olin took the pitching loss for the Streaks. He allowed three runs in the first inning and one in the second. GHS rallied to cut their deficit to 4-3 with a three-run third inning, but that was all the offense they could muster. Rocky added three more runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a couple of GHS fielding errors.
    The Rocks out-hit the Streaks 7 to 2 in the opener. Jared Scott and Dalton Davis had the GHS hits.
    In the nightcap pitching was the ball game. The Streaks' Derek Schwab allowed just four hits and two runs in the loss. Rocky's pitching held GHS' boys to one run on three hits.
    The Streaks broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Olin scored on Jake Henderson's sacrifice fly. Rock Island re-tied the score with a solo run in the fifth and got what proved to be the game-winner in the op of the sixth. Derek Schwab, Olin and Henderson had singles.
    Monday, the GHS sophomores will tie to even-up their season record when they travel to Alleman for a non-conference contest.
Streak sophs shut out Metamora
4/4 - Freshman Nick Milligan made a successful debut on the mound for the GHS sophomore baseball team, here Friday, night getting the win in a 9-0 victory over Metamora.
    Milligan, who had a no-hitter through four innings, combined with reliever Jake Henderson for the five-hit shutout.
    With the win, the Streak sophs moved their season record to 4-3, heading into Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader with Rock Island.
    GHS scored two runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take command of the contest. They plated three more in the fourth and one in the fifth.
    The Streaks finished with seven hits. Nate Olin and Derek Schwab had two apiece and Dalton Davis, Henderson and Jared Scott each finished with one. 
GHS sophs win shortened contest
4/3 - (PEORIA) A seven-run second inning proved decisive as the GHS sophomore baseball team won a five-inning contest 7-6 against Limestone at O'Brien Field, Thursday.
    An injury in the top of the sixth inning stopped the action and the sophomores' time limit ran-out, ending the game.
    With the win, the Streaks evened their season record at 3-3.
    Limestone scored a solo run in the first inning before GHS erupted for their big inning. In that frame the Streaks sent 11 men to the plate and pounded out eight hits - six of them coming with two outs. Limestone added two runs in the third and three more in the fifth.
    Steven Joseph got the win on the mound for the Streaks. Jake Henderson led the winners with two hits. Dalton Davis, Nate Olin, Derek Schwab, Mark Zhorne, Jared Scott and Joseph all had basehits.
Streak sophomores beat Macomb
4/2 - (MACOMB) Known so far this season for their generosity to opponents, GHS' sophomore baseball team shook off their reputation in a 6-1 victory at Macomb, Wednesday.
    The Streaks start slowly, struggling with the Macomb pitcher's slower speed, but eventually they broke loose with a four-run fifth inning. Zach Dixon had a bases loaded single to key the rally.
    Nate Olin started the game on the mound for the Streaks and allowed just one earned run. Derek Schwab picked up the win in relief. Each the "Saturday" starters threw approximately 35 pitches. Jake Taylor finished the game in relief.
    Jake Henderson led the GHS offense with a pair of hits and an RBI.
    Thursday, the GHS sophs are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. at O'Brien Field in Peoria against Limestone.
Streak sophs split with Canton
3/29 - (CANTON) GHS' sophomore baseball team had a good chance to pick up their first two wins of the season, Saturday, but some bad defensive play made them settle for a split at Canton. The host Little Giants rallied to win the first game 8-7, but the Streaks took the nightcap 7-3.
    In the opener, GHS' sophs rolled up a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Derek Schwab had the key blow, a three-run double. Then, things went south for the Streaks. They committed 14 fielding errors and made some baserunning mistakes, allowing Canton to tie the game in the fifth and take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nate Olin took the pitching loss.
     After leaving the field somewhat embarrassed following the first game, GHS' sophs responded in a positive fashion behind solid pitching and steady defense. Schwab went the distance on the hill and the Streaks only committed two errors. Offensively, freshmen Andrew Steck and Dalton Davis both had a good effort at the plate.
     The GHS sophs are scheduled to make-up an early rain-out at Macomb, Wednesday.
Rough start sinks Streak sophs
3/25 - GHS' sophomore baseball team surrendered five runs in the first inning and tried unsuccessfully to play catch-up in a 13-9 loss to Morton, here Tuesday.
    With the loss, the young Streaks fell to 0-2 on the early-season campaign.
    Morton took advantage of four straight walks to open the contest and plated five in the first at bat with only two hits. GHS began the comeback trail with a solo run in the second and two in the third.
    Morton regained the lead 8-3 in the top of the fourth before the Streaks struck for five runs to knot the score 8-8. Unfortunately, GHS could not keep the Potters from scoring as they outscored the Streaks 5-1 over the final three innings.
    Offensively, GHS hit the ball and five players had multiple-hit games. Mark Zhorne reached base five straight times and Dalton Davis, Nate Olin, Andrew Steck and Jake Taylor also had two or more hits apiece.
    GHS' sophomores will play at East Peoria on Thursday. The starting time will be 4:15 p.m.
Streak sophs give away opener
3/24 - GHS' sophomore baseball team was generous, Monday, in their season opener with Peoria Notre Dame. The young Streaks took an 8-4 lead into the top of the seventh inning, but could not
seal the victory, allowing PND to tie the score and eventually win the contest 9-8 in eight innings.
    GHS' sophs took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 after three innings. The Streaks added three more runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth, they suffered inning-ending double plays in the final two innings.
    Notre Dame rallied for four runs in the seventh on three walks, a couple of wild pitches and an error. A couple of singles and another error helped the Irish plate what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth.
    Nate Olin pitched into the fourth inning for the Streaks, but did not figure in the decision. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits, while walking two and striking out five. Steven Joseph pitched two and a third innings, allowing five runs. Jake Taylor pitched the eighth and took the loss.

    GHS out-hit PND 10 to 8. Dalton Davis, Jake Henderson, Andrew Steck and Nate Olin had two hits apiece.
    Tuesday, the young Streaks will try again for their first victory when they host Morton in a single make-up game starting at 11 a.m.
