| Streak
sophomores finish season 14-7 |
5/15 - Perhaps it was
appropriate that in a spring filled with rain-outs, the GHS
sophomore baseball team would end their season Tuesday with
yet another rain-out. Actually, Tuesday's rain-out was a
doubleheader as the young Streaks were scheduled to play
both Canton and Limestone at Sundberg Field. Neither game
will be made up as several of the sophomores will play on
with the varsity. Coach Jake Miller's crew finished 14-7,
overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Streaks' games
against Quincy were not played, leaving them two games short
of a full Western Big 6 campaign. |

the Streaks' four-run third inning. Rock Island errors
combined with four GHS hits fueled the first inning
outburst. In the fourth, Bo Merritt and Austin Shearer both

baseball team defeated the GHS sophs for the third time this
season, Wednesday, as took control early and limited the

runs |
 |
in the
first inning before GHS starting pitcher Austin
Shearer struck out a pair to leave two more Moline baserunners in scoring position. The visitors added solo
runs in the third, fourth and fifth to go ahead 6-0 before
the Streaks could get on the scoreboard. In the bottom of
the fifth, Ben Schneider singled with one out and scored on
a wild throw to first on Shey Sibley's infield hit. Brian
Gernant then singled home Sibley. With the score cut to 6-2
things looked better for the Streaks, but only temporarily.
The Maroons added two more runs in the sixth to regain their
six-run advantage. GHS managed one more |
|
run in their
final at bat as Gernant was hit by a pitch with the bases
loaded to force in a run. That, however, was all the home
team could muster. Gernant had two hits to lead the Streaks
six-hit attack. Moline pounded out 12 hits. The Maroons got
solid pitching from starter Sam Wilveer and reliever Paul
Mills. The pair combined for 12 strikeouts. The busy week
continues for the GHS sophs, Thursday, when they host Rock
Island in a non-conference game. |
|
Late rally pushes Streak sophs
past Macomb |
5/8 - Matt Lundeen was in
command on the mound, but needed to wait for his teammates
to get things together offensively in Tuesday's GHS
sophomore baseball team's 7-2 victory over Macomb. The
Streaks scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
to break a 2-2 deadlock and seal |
 |
the deal.
With the win, the GHS sophs moved their season record to 11-6. Lundeen spotted
the visiting Bombers two runs in the first inning, but then
shut them out the rest of the way. He only allowed three
hits in the contest and struck out one. Nearly all the
Macomb outs were ground outs. The Streaks also scored two
runs in the first inning, but then struggled to get another
run across the plate until the sixth. Ben Schneider led off
that inning with a hit. Bunts from Corey Verseman and Jordan
Lieber and Ben LaFollette getting hit by a pitch loaded the
bases with one out. Shey Sibley then hit one through the
pulled-in infield to score the go-ahead run. A hit by Blake
Carr brought two more runs and Jordan Sadiq finished things
off with his fourth hit of the day - a two-run single. In
addition to Sadiq's hitting prowess, the |
|
Streaks got two hits
from Carr and one each from Sibley, Jake Anderson and
Schneider. Wednesday, the GHS sophs will host Moline in a
non-conference game. That game will be played on the varsity
field due to the make-up girls soccer match. |

Moline sweeps GHS sophomores |
5/5 - GHS' sophomore baseball
team fell twice to Moline, here Saturday, 4-1 and 7-2. With
the losses, the young Streaks saw their Western Big 6 record
dip to 3-3 and their overall mark fall to 10-6.
The first game was a
tight battle that saw the two teams tied 1-1, heading
into the seventh inning.
Moline put together a
threat in that frame as they had baserunners on second
and third with two outs. An intentional walk loaded the
bases. On an 0-2 pitch, the next batter ripped a double that
cleared the bases. Tanner Libby, who had the only RBI for
the Streaks, took the complete pitching loss. GHS' boys had
a difficult time recovering from the game-one
heartbreaker. Moline hit the ball well and took advantage
of some Streak errors to take the nightcap by five runs.
Offensively, GHS scored both runs on wild pitches. The
losing pitcher was Caleb Diefendorf. He left the game with
the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth. The score was
tied 2-2 at the time. Caleb Weaver came on in relief in
that tough situation and could not stop the Maroons from
taking the lead for good. |

Maple Leafs. |
