| Streak
sophs end season on high note |
5/17 - Sometimes the game
players remember most is the last one of the season and if
that's the case, GHS' sophomore baseball team has something
positive to remember. Wednesday, the young Streaks shut out
Peoria Notre Dame 5-0 to close the season just shy of |
the .500 mark (11-12). Freshman Rogue Schott, who has emerged as
the "ace" of the sophomore team, was on his game as he went
all seven innings to pick up the pitching victory. Caleb
Weaver, another freshman, had a pair of RBIs and Cole Unger
executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to drive in another
run. GHS' sophomores, coached by Jake
Miller with help from Chad Goad, Jamie Taylor and
|
 |
|
| Chris Howard, finished the season 4-6 in league play
and 7-6 in non-conference games. They ended up losing seven
games off their schedule to the weather. |

GHS
sophomores shut down Sherrard 9-3 |
5/9 - After getting tagged for
three runs in the top of the first inning, Mark Mason and
his teammates on the GHS sophomore baseball team bounced
back to score a 9-3 nine-inning victory over Sherrard, here
Tuesday. With the win, the Streak sophomores moved a step
closer to .500 as they improved their season record to
10-12. Mason shook off the dubious start and pitched eight
scoreless innings. With some fine defensive |
support,
the GHS lefty scattered seven hits, struck out three
and walked only two. Perhaps the spark the Streaks needed came immediately
in the bottom of the first inning as they scored three quick
runs to erase the Tigers' lead. Jake Milligan drew a walk to
lead-off the inning. A Kyle sacrifice later, Brian Gernant
put the Streaks on the scoreboard with an RBI double. Alex
Lozano was hit by a pitch and some wild pitches and passed
balls helped the GHS boys plate two more runs. |
 |
|
The Streaks
took the lead in the fourth with a solo run. The walk aided
the cause as McGee led-off with a free pass and eventually
scored. In the fourth and fifth innings, GHS added
additional runs to move ahead 6-3. Walks again proved
helpful to the Streaks. McGee and Michael Jordan drove in
the runs. In the seventh, GHS put the game away with three
more runs. Ryan McCullough and Rogue Schott had key hits in
the uprising. The Streaks had seven hits, the same total as Sherrard, but the difference was pitching as the Tiger
hurlers surrendered eight walks in the contest. McGee,
Gernant, Adam Smith, Caleb Weaver, Scott, McCullough and
Schott had one baserap apiece for the winners. Friday, the
GHS sophomores will travel to East Peoria for a 4:30 p.m.
contest. |

| Sophomore
Streaks split league doubleheader |
5/6 - They wanted a sweep, but
had to settle for a split. GHS' sophomore baseball team won
the first game of their doubleheader with Quincy, Saturday,
but dropped the nightcap 12-9. With the split, the GHS sophs
completed the Western Big 6 season with a 4-6 record. They
moved to 9-12, overall. Rogue Schott pitched a shutout in the
opener for the Streaks. In the second game, the home team
could not out-score Quincy. Next up for the GHS sophs will
be a make-up doubleheader Tuesday at home against Sherrard.
They will travel with the varsity, Thursday, to Rock Island
for a non-conference contest. |
| GHS sophs
sweep United Township |
5/4 - GHS' sophomore baseball
team got their third straight win over United Township, here
Thursday. The young Streaks scored three runs in the first
inning and never looked back in a 6-3 victory. With the win,
GHS' sophs captured the season series with U.T. and moved
their record to 8-11, heading into Saturday's doubleheader
with Quincy. Freshman Brian Gernant picked up the pitching
victory for the Streaks with some relief help from Caleb
Weaver. U.T. was limited to two runs in the fifth inning and
a solo tally in the seven. The Panthers had six hits in the
contest. GHS jumped out to their lead in the first as Kyle
McGee walked and was followed by three straight hits.
Gernant and Alex Lozano singled and Weaver doubled to plate
three runs. The Streaks added two more in the third as McGee
walked again. Hits by Lozano and T.J. Scott added to GHS'
lead. One more run would score for the winners in the sixth.
The Streaks used three walks, a sacrifice and hit by Tanner
Libby to bring home the insurance. |

Richwoods
downs GHS sophomores 9-1 |
5/3 - (PEORIA) GHS' sophomore
baseball team scored in their first at bats, Wednesday
night, but couldn't get any more runs as they dropped a 9-1
decision at Peoria Richwoods. The win under the lights for
the Knights avenged an earlier 6-5 road setback to the
Streaks. Brendon Roberts was tagged with the pitching loss.
He hurled the first three innings and then gave way to Ryan
McCullough, who slammed the door on Richwoods.
Unfortunately, only T.J. Scott's sacrifice fly in the first
inning produced GHS' only run. Roberts scored on the deep
poke by Scott. With the loss, the sophomore Streaks fell to
7-11 on the season. They will host United Township,
Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. and then conclude the Western Big 6
campaign, Saturday, at home against Quincy. |

GHS sophomores sweep United
Township |
5/2 - (SILVIS) GHS' sophomore
baseball team swept a doubleheader from United Township,
Tuesday, to give themselves a shot at a .500 conference
season. The Streaks clubbed the young Panthers 11-1 in six
innings in the opener and then rallied from an 8-5 deficit
in their final at bat to steal the nightcap 9-8. With wins,
the GHS sophs moved to 3-5 in conference and 7-10, overall.
Rogue Schott picked up the pitching victory in the first
game, enjoying the offensive support. In the nightcap, Mark
Mason earned the victory and Ryan McCullough pitched a
scoreless bottom of the seventh for the save. The young
Streaks will travel to Peoria Richwoods, Wednesday night,
for a 7 p.m. contest. |
| GHS
sophomores show improvement despite loss |
4/26 - The last time GHS'
sophomore baseball team met Moline failed to score a run.
Wednesday, the young Streaks put up a fight in a 7-3 loss.
Despite a more competitive effort, the GHS sophs saw their the
season record slip to 5-10. |
 |
Moline built a 7-1 lead through five innings, but the
Streak rallied in the sixth for two runs and came very
close to adding more in the final two innings.
The visitors had 12 hits in the contest. They scored
three in the second inning to grab the lead and added
two more in both the third and fifth innings.
GHS got a solo run on a lead-off homerun by freshman
Caleb Weaver in the second. Then, after going down in
order next three innings, the Streaks struck again in
the sixth. Brendon Roberts singled to open the frame.
Kyle McGee followed with a double and freshman Brian
Gernant clubbed a double to right center to chase home
both Roberts and McGee. A sacrifice fly moved Gernant
to third, but that was as far as he could get. GHS got
a runner into scoring position in their final at bat,
but could not mount the comeback.
The Streaks finished with five hits. Roberts, McGee,
Gernant, Weaver and T.J. Scott had one apiece. Ryan
McCullough battled on the mound and with the exception
of a |
|
couple of errors
in the third inning, the GHS' boys played well defensively.
They turned a double-play and even threw out a Moline runner
at the plate. Saturday, the GHS sophs will travel to East
Moline for a conference doubleheader against United
Township. |

|
| GHS
sophomores split doubleheader |
4/22 - GHS'
sophomore baseball team picked up their first Western Big 6
victory, here Saturday, in a doubleheader split with Alleman.
The 4-2 victory came in the first game. Alleman won the
nightcap in six innings 15-5. With the split, the young
Streaks moved to 1-5 in conference play and 5-9, overall.
Rogue Schott went the distance on the mound for GHS in the
opener. The freshman scattered nine hits, struck out six and
walked three. Alleman threatened several times throughout
the |
 |
contest,
but only managed to plate solo runs in the first and
sixth innings. The Streaks scored single runs in the
second and fourth and then plated two in the fifth for
the victory. Schott also led GHS at the plate with three hits.
Adam Smith added two and Jake Milligan, Caleb Weaver and
Colton Unger had one apiece. In the nightcap, Alleman broke
out the big sticks and inflicted major damage. The Pioneers
scored five runs in the first inning, six in the fourth and
four more in the sixth. In the fourth Alleman belted three
consecutive |
|
homeruns. They
had another homer in the first.

the third and one in both the fifth and sixth frames. Alleman out-hit the Streaks 19-7 in the night cap. Unger led
GHS with three hits. Gernant had two and Brendon Roberts and
Smith had one each. The sophomore Streaks will travel to
Washington, Tuesday. |
| Streak
sophs rally to defeat Morton 8-7 |
4/21 - Coach Jake Miller told
his GHS sophomore baseball team, Friday, guys needed to
"step-up in a pressure situation". In the bottom of the
seventh, they did. The young Streaks rallied for three runs
to come from behind and beat Morton 8-7. With the
non-conference victory, GHS' sophs improved their season
record to 4-8. As the final score
might indicate, the score with close throughout. Morton
scored two runs in the
|
top of the
first inning and the Streaks countered with two in
their side of the frame. In the second inning, GHS
took a 3-2 lead. Morton then briefly regained the lead
with two in their side of the third, before the
Streaks tied it up again with a solo run. Morton pushed across two in the fourth and
GHS, one, to trail 6-5. The visitors added another run in
the sixth and took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the
seventh. With their backs to the wall, the young Streaks
responded. Freshman Brian Gernant doubled to open the
inning. Caleb Weaver reached on a error on his hard-hit
grounder.
|
 |
|
Ryan McCollough laid down a sacrifice bunt to
score Gernant and advance Weaver. A sacrifice fly moved
Weaver to third and then GHS found some luck. Adam Smith's
grounder looked to be the final out, but a Morton fielding
error kept hope alive. Taking advantage of their "extra out"
the Streaks' Mark Mason cracked a double to score Weaver and
courtesy runner Austin Shearer for the walk-off victory.
Brendon Roberts went the distance on the mound to get the
victory for GHS' sophs. He allowed only four hits, but was
victimized by Streak fielding errors. GHS pounded out 11
hits, including five extra base hits. Gernant and T.J. Scott
had two hits each to lead the Streaks. Jake Milligan, Kyle
McGee, Weaver, McCullough, Smith, Mason and Isiah Cunningham
added one hit apiece. Taylor Sauder hit a
two-run homer to lead the Potters. Saturday, the GHS sophs
will try to get their first conference victories when they
host Alleman in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.

Washington outscores GHS sophs
15-8 |
4/20 - A seven-run third inning
for Washington proved to be the difference, Thursday, as the
GHS sophomore baseball team lost 15-8 to the Panthers. The
non-conference loss dropped the young Streaks to 3-8 on the
season. Things looked good early for the GHS boys as they
erased 1-0 Washington lead with a three-run |
second
inning. T.J. Scott and Brendon Roberts both singled in
the frame and the Streaks took advantage of two
Panther fielding errors. The GHS 3-1 lead did not last
very long, however, as Washington came back with their
seven-run explosion in the top of the third. The
visitors had seven hits in the inning and took
advantage a couple of Streak errors. In the bottom
of the inning, GHS got two runs back to cut the deficit to
8-5, but the Washington scoring could not be curtailed. The
Panthers added one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in
the sixth and three more in the seventh. For the Streaks, a
bottom of the seventh |
 |
|
rally plated
three more runs, but it was too little, too late to affect
the outcome. In the seventh, Caleb Weaver doubled in two of
the runs. Mark Mason
took the pitching loss for the Streaks, working four and a
third innings. Freshman Brian Gernant relieved a finished
for GHS. Washington out-hit the Streaks 13-9. Scott, Weaver

GHS sophs hang on to edge

a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but stranded the
potential tying run at second as the GHS sophomore baseball
team survived for a 6-5 win, here Monday. With the win, the
young Streaks improved their season record to 3-7. GHS' boys
spotted the visitors a solo run in the top of the first

bases loaded the two previous innings, the Streaks put

into two runs for the Streaks. Richwoods chipped away at

the |
|
Streaks added a
run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan McCullough
opened the frame with a walk. Scott singled. A sacrifice
bunt by Brendon Roberts brought in courtesy runner Jake
Milligan. That sixth inning run turned out to be a big one
for GHS as Richwoods plated two runs on
four hits in their final at bat. McCullough went the
distance on the mound for the Streak victory. He allowed 10
hits, but walked only one. Richwoods pitchers allowed only
five hits, but walked 10 and hit several batters. Scott had

GHS sophs fall twice against Rocks |
4/15 - GHS' sophomore baseball
team played hard, but needed to play a bit sharper,
Saturday, as they dropped a conference doubleheader to Rock
Island 6-3, 5-3. With the losses, the young Streaks fell to
0-4 in the Western Big 6 and 2-7, overall. In the opener,
Rock Island all six of their runs in the first three innings
and then held off the Streaks' comeback efforts. The Rocks
had three hits, including a double in the top of the first
|
 |
inning to
plate a pair of runs. Three more runs came across for
Rocky in the second inning as a couple of walks an
error and a hit helped the visitors to a 3-0 lead. The
final Rocky run in the third with two outs. A double
and follow-up single extended the Rock Island advantage. GHS had runners
in scoring position three times through the first five
innings, but did not get the key hit. In the sixth, the
Streak finally put things together. A lead-off double by
Kyle McGee, a error, another double by Caleb Weaver and
back-to-back singles by Michael Jordan and Alex Lozano

left stranded at second. Brendon Roberts and Rogue Schott

|
|
GHS finished
with five hits, with McGee leading the way with two. In the nightcap, the Streaks had golden opportunities

Streak sophomores split two games |
4/11 - GHS'
sophomore baseball team turned in a solid effort, Tuesday
morning, as they slipped past East Peoria 3-2 in a rain
make-up. Later in the day they traveled to Dunlap and
dropped a tough 9-8 decision in nine innings. With the
split, the Streak sophs saw their record slip to 2-5. They
will face Rock Island in a Western Big 6 doubleheader at
home, Saturday. |
| Streak
sophomores drop three games |
4/8 - (METAMORA/MOLINE) Despite
finishing early, Coach Jake Miller had his GHS sophomore
baseball team watch the ending of the varsity's 13-inning
victory at Moline, Saturday. He hoped it would help them see
what Western Big 6 baseball was about. Unfortunately, a few
hour before, the Streak sophs struggled big time with the concept in
an embarrassing 8-0, 10-0 doubleheader loss to the Maroons.
The two losses Saturday also came on the heels of a tough 4-3
setback at Metamora the night before. GHS led until the host
Redbirds rallied in the seventh inning for the victory. The
Streak sophs stand 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
GHS' sophs will have an opportunity to get back on the winning
track, Tuesday, when they host East Peoria at 10 a.m. and
travel to Dunlap later in the day for a 4:30 p.m. contest. |
| Weather cancels more freshmen &
sophomore games |
4/3 - It seems like the little guys can't
get a break. GHS' freshmen and sophomore baseball schedule
took another hit from Mother Nature this week. Monday's
freshmen baseball doubleheader with Kewanee had to be
cancelled due to wet grounds and will not be made up. Due to
a numbers crunch with the Kewanee baseball program and other
games the Boilers had to makeup, it was decided to drop the
doubleheader. Tuesday's home sophomore baseball game with Dunlap was also
indirectly cancelled by the weather. Dunlap will opt out of
the date to make-up a conference game. The teams are
scheduled to play again next Tuesday at Dunlap. |
| Sophs
open season with
doubleheader split |
4/1 - (CANTON) After waiting through several
cancellations, GHS' sophomore baseball team finally got a
chance to play, Saturday. The young Streaks struggled
through the first contest, losing 9-3, but rebounded to
pound the Little Giants in the nightcap 28-5. First game
jitters were apparent in the opener for GHS as they
committed seven errors. The Streaks took a 1-0 lead in the
first inning, but saw Canton come up with a pair in their
side. GHS tied the score 2-2 with another run in the third.
Canton pushed three runs across in the bottom of the inning
to regain the lead and then put the contest away with a
five-run fourth. The Streaks managed one more run in the
sixth. Tanner Libby pitched four innings and took loss. Mark
Mason relieved. Shey Sibley had two hits to lead a six-hit
attack in the opener. In the nightcap, it got ugly real
quick and the Streaks made it a five-inning affair. GHS
scored three runs in the first, four in the second, five in
the third, four in the fourth and 12 in the fifth. Brendon
Roberts enjoyed the offensive support as he picked up the
pitching victory. Rogue Schott relieved and tossed two
innings. Alex Lozano had four hits to lead the potent GHS
attack. Brian Gernant, Caleb Weaver and Libby had three hits
each. Blake Carr, Sibley and Derek White had two apiece. The
Streak sophs (1-1) hope to host Dunlap, Tuesday, if the
weather conditions will allow. |
