Chuck Bednar Award
Lozano chosen by teammates
This year's Chuck Bednar "Most Valuable Baseball Player" Award winner Alex Lozano impressed his teammates with his persistence, intensity and talent.
Cut from the team his junior year, Lozano put together a solid Legion season before giving  high school baseball one more shot.
Lozano earned a starting spot on the 22-11 Streaks. He caught most of the games and batted .346 in league play.
Lozano was named "Honorable Mention" All-Conference by the Western Big 6 coaches.

IHSA Regional
Dunlap ends Streaks' season
5/30 - (BARTONVILLE) A team that wasn't good enough to play the teams they were originally scheduled to play in this year's Streaks Classic turned out to be plenty good enough to capture a
Regional title, Saturday, at Limestone. The upstart Eagles pushed their season record over .500 (18-17) with a 7-3 victory over GHS' varsity baseball team.
For the top-seeded and senior-led Streaks, the loss in the Regional championship game was nothing less than frustrating. The Streaks had won five in a row coming into the Regional and seemed to have had things on course for a Regional title, but Dunlap had other ideas.
Five unearned runs in the second inning gave Dunlap the lead and that combined with no hitting in the middle of the line-up doomed the Streaks' comeback attempts.
Trailing 5-0 through the first three and a half innings, GHS finally got on the scoreboard on an RBI single by sophomore Nick Milligan. Dunlap added another two runs in the sixth to
take a 7-1 advantage into the Streaks' final at bats.
GHS managed to load the bases with one out and scored twice on walks, but could not score any more runs.
Senior Rogue Schott took the pitching loss. He struck out five and walked two. N. Milligan relieved in the sixth.
Dunlap out-hit the Streaks 9 to 5. N. Milligan and brother Jacob Milligan had two hits apiece to lead GHS. Both teams committed two errors in the contest.
The Streaks finished the 2009 campaign with a 22-11 record.
IHSA Regional
Streaks roll past Peoria High
5/28 - (BARTONVILLE) It a little while for the GHS varsity baseball team to get their offense in gear, but when they did, they thumped Peoria High in five innings 13-2 to advance to Saturday's Class 3A Regional championship game.
The Streaks (22-10) trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the third, but rallied for three runs to
regain the lead and then literally put the contest away in the fourth with nine runs.
Derek Schwab earned the pitching victory, tossing the first three innings. He allowed both Peoria High runs on  two hits. He walked two and struck out four. Both runs were unearned. Sophomore Tyler Ferrell came on in relief and struck out the side in the fourth. Jake Taylor finished in the fifth. He allowed two hits, but no runs. He struck out two.
Shortstop Caleb Weaver gunned out a Peoria High baserunner trying to score in the top of the first inning and then GHS took a 1-0 lead in their side. Mark Zhorne singled and eventually stole home.

Peoria High took advantage of two two-out walks to plate a pair of runs in the top of the third. They held a 2-1 lead only briefly as the Streaks plated three in third on two hits and a fielder's choice.
In the fourth inning rally, the first seven GHS batters who went to the plate scored. Weaver had a triple and knocked in two runs to lead the way.
Zhorne and Alex Lozano led the Streaks with two hits apiece in the nine-hit attack. Dalton Davis, Weaver, Jordan Sadiq, Nick Milligan and Jacob Milligan had one hit each.
Saturday at 11 a.m., the Streaks will meet Dunlap for the Regional title.
Silver Streaks Classic
Streaks roll past East Aurora
5/23 - It took a little while to get started after playing the late game Friday night, but once GHS' varsity baseball team got things going, East Aurora was a five-inning 11-1 victim.
The victory was the Streaks' fourth in a row as they try to gain momentum heading into next week's IHSA Regional at Limestone. GHS' varsity, which got rained out of the final game of the Classic, moved to 21-10.
East Aurora jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and held that until the bottom of the third. In that frame, the Streaks scored eight runs on only two hits. They took advantage of six walks and a hit by pitch.
In the fourth, Dalton Davis' three-run homer gave GHS a 10-run margin. Sophomore Tyler Farrell shut out the Tomcats in the top of the fifth to end the contest.
Derek Schwab, the Streaks' starting pitcher went four innings, allowing three

hits. He struck out one and walked two to earn the victory.
Offensively, the Streaks had only six hits. Davis and Bo Merritt led with two apiece. Zach McCrery and Jake Taylor also had baseraps. Davis, Mark Zhorne, Taylor and Andrew Steck scored two runs apiece.

Schott showed why he is the ace of Coach Arnie Gonzalez' staff as he struck out 10 and scattered five hits in six innings of work. Tanner Libby earned the save with a three-up-three-down performance in the seventh.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and carried that until the third when GHS took the lead with a pair of runs. A couple of errors and hits by Jacob Milligan and Nate Olin got the the Streaks on the scoreboard. The Streaks added three more runs in the fifth, again putting together some hits with Irish errors. Notre Dame got a two-out two-run single by Mark Schifeling in the sixth to cut the deficit, but Libby squelched the visitors' hopes for a rally in the seventh.
GHS only had five hits, but took advantage of six Notre Dame errors. Milligan led with two singles. Alex Lozano, Nick Milligan and Olin had the other baseraps.
The Streaks, now 20-10 on the season, will face East Aurora at 9 a.m. Saturday and play the final game in the Classic against Sterling at 5 p.m.
Streaks win at Woodmen Park
5/18 - (DAVENPORT) After the weather stole three potential victories from the GHS varsity baseball schedule this past weekend, the Streaks returned to action Monday with a 6-1 win over Alleman at Modern Woodmen Park.
With the non-conference victory, the GHS varsity improved to 19-10 on the season. They will host their end of the season Classic this coming weekend.
Monday's game gave GHS head coach Arnie Gonzalez the chance to use his entire squad. Five pitchers saw action with starter Rogue Schott earning the victory with three innings of work. The senior ace allowed no runs or hits. He struck out three. Derek Schwab, Nick Milligan, Chris Fields and Tanner Libby followed tossing one inning apiece. Alleman scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Mitch VanNatta.

Jacob Milligan and Caleb Weaver both drove in runs. In the final frame, the Streaks took advantage of some walks at plated two more runs.
GHS out-hit Alleman 9 to 4. Weaver and J. Milligan led the attack with two hits each. Libby, Sadiq, Bo Merritt, N. Milligan and Jake Henderson had one hit apiece. Mark VanNatta led the Pioneers with two hits and scored their only run.
Senior Day
Huge comeback for Streaks
5/15 - It was a day to remember. GHS' varsity baseball team fell behind 10-0 to Western Big 6 champion Rock Island, but rallied back to win 11-10, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
GHS' seven seniors were recognized prior to the game and that ceremony, although nicely
done, must have affected their focus as they saw Rocky send 11 men to the plate and score six runs in the opening frame. The Streaks were still reeling in the second inning as the visiting Rocks plated for more runs.
Streak starting pitcher Austin Shearer left the mound after Rocky's Nathan Gray connected for a three-run homer in the second inning. Sophomore Tyler Farrell then took over on the mound and held Rocky scoreless for four innings. During that time, the Streaks got back into the contest. Nick Milligan tossed the final two innings and earned the victory.
GHS scored seven runs in the second inning. The Streaks had six hits in the frame, but none bigger than Caleb Weaver's grand slam homerun. Tanner Libby hit a three-run homer with two-out in the third to tie the score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Milligan led off the inning reaching on an error. Mark Zhorne bunted him over to second and Rocky pitched around Libby. Weaver singled, but the sharpness of the hit did not allow Milligan to score. Alex Lozano then completed a four-hit night delivering a game-winning RBI single.
GHS had 15 hits in the contest. Lozano led the way

and Weaver added three hits. Zhorne, Libby and J. Milligan had two hits apiece. Jordan Sadiq and Farrell had one hit each.
The non-conference win broke a two-year losing streak against the Rocks and raised the Streaks' season record to 18-10. GHS' varsity is scheduled to compete in the Pontiac Tournament this Saturday.
Peoria N.D. turns back Streaks
5/12 - GHS' varsity baseball team could not crawl out of the hole they fell into in the first three innings against Peoria Notre Dame and lost 9-7, here Tuesday.
The visiting Irish jumped on Streak starting pitcher Nate Olin for seven runs in the first two

innings and led 8-0 going into the bottom of the third. GHS plated a solo run in the third and thanks to solid relief work from Jake Taylor and Austin Shearer kept P.N. D. from adding one to their lead.
In the sixth, the Streaks' offense came alive, scoring six runs. Four of those runs came from a grand slam by Mark Zhorne. The Streaks had seven hits in that frame.
Trailing just 8-7 going into the seventh, the Irish plated an insurance run against Derek Schwab. The Streaks had a chance in the bottom of the seventh when the Irish issued a one-out walk to Tanner Libby, but two strikeouts ended the contest.
GHS out-hit P.N.D. 12 to 10 in the contest. Senior Caleb Weaver was 4-for-4 to lead the attack. Andrew Steck had three hits, including a double and triple. Alex Lozano added two hits and Zhorne, Rogue Schott and Nick Milligan had one hit apiece.

With the non-conference loss, the Streaks fell to 17-10 on the season. They are scheduled to host Rock Island Thursday, weather-permitting. It will be Senior Day.
Rock Island sweeps Streaks
5/9 - (ROCK ISLAND) Rock Island needed to win both ends of Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader against GHS' varsity baseball team to clinch a share of the conference title and that's exactly what the Rocks did. Rock Island won 9-4 and 6-2.
With the losses, the Streaks finish the conference campaign 4-6. They lost their final five league contests. They also fell to 17-9 on the season. Rock Island finished 8-2 in league play and moved to 18-8, overall.
In the opener, GHS led 4-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but Rock Island rallied to plate seven runs. The Streaks could not respond.
Rogue Schott took the pitching loss. He gave up eight runs and reliever Nick Milligan was touched for one more in the sixth.
In the nightcap, Rock Island grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Both were unearned runs. The Rocks added another unearned run in the third, two more runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth.
Tanner Libby took the pitching loss. Austin Shearer was touched for one run in relief.
GHS scored their first run in fourth on Derek Schwab’s two-out double. Bo Merritt led off the GHS seventh with his second home run of the season, but that was all the Streaks could muster.
Tuesday, GHS' varsity will host Peoria Notre Dame in a non-conference contest.
Streaks hold off Pekin rally
5/5 - (PEKIN) It was an artistic performance, but nonetheless effective as the GHS varsity baseball team beat Pekin 10-7, Tuesday.
With the non-conference win, the Streaks upped their season record to 17-7. They are scheduled to play at United Township, Thursday, for a non-conference game. It will be the fourth time this season the two teams have met.
Against Pekin, Derek Schwab earned the pitching victory, allowing three runs in five innings. He struck out three and scattered six hits. Jacob Milligan pitched one inning and started the seventh before giving way to Jake Taylor, who got the final three outs.
The Streaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in the second. Pekin cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the second. GHS scored a solo run in the fourth  and then used a big five-run fifth to go up 10-3. A four-run sixth for Pekin gave the Streaks some anxious moments, but Taylor, who came on in relief in the seventh with two on and nobody out, came through for the save.
The Streaks had 11 hits in the contest. Alex Lozano cracked a two-run homer in the five-run fifth to lead the way. He had two hits. Mark Zhorne, Jacob Milligan and Tanner Libby also had two hits apiece. Caleb Weaver, Jordan Sadiq and Rogue Schott had one hit each.
Streaks stop losing skid
5/4 - After a rough week, GHS' varsity baseball team shook up the line-up and posted an 8-4 non-conference victory over Geneseo, here Monday.
With the win, Coach Arnie Gonzalez' crew moved to 16-7 on the season. They had lost four in row prior to the Geneseo game.
Sophomore Nick Milligan's pitching performance wasn't stellar, but effective enough to earn the victory. He allowed three runs in five innings, striking out three and walking six. The key to Milligan's success was getting out of jams. Geneseo stranded five runners who were on base before two out. Caleb Weaver toss an inning of relief and Austin Shearer another.
The Streaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added three in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Bo Merritt had two hits and three RBI's to lead the Streaks. He hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the home team's final runs. Dalton Davis and Mark Zhorne had two hits apiece. Jordan Sadiq had one hit and two RBI's. Milligan, Derek Schwab, Shearer and Jake Henderson also had one hit each.
The Streaks will try to keep their momentum Tuesday when they travel to Pekin for a non-conference game.
Moline sweeps Streak varsity
5/2 - Hopes for a Western Big 6 title fades for the GHS varsity baseball team as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader 9-3 and 7-1, here Saturday.
With one doubleheader remaining against co-league leader Rock Island, it would nothing short of a miracle for the Streaks (4-4, 15-7) to earn a piece of the conference title. To do that, Quincy would have to sweep Moline (6-2, 13-8-1) and the Streaks would have to sweep 6-2 Rocky to create three-way tie for the title.
Moline out-hit GHS 24-14 for the doubleheader and played better defense, committing just two errors to the Streaks' six for the day.
Moline jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and never looked back. GHS starting pitcher Rogue Schott took the loss.
In the second game, Moline allowed just one unearned run and were barely threatened. Tanner Libby took the loss on the mound for the Streaks.
Moline shuts out GHS varsity
4/29 - (MOLINE) Hopefully, it will not be a preview of Saturday's crucial Western Big 6 doubleheader. Wednesday, Moline rolled past GHS' varsity baseball team 8-0 in a non-conference contest.
With the loss, the Streaks fell to 15-5 on the season. They will host Peoria Richwoods Thursday, weather-permitting, and then face Moline at home Saturday.
In Wednesday's game at Moline, GHS' boys did not play like a team with 15 wins. They struggled offensively and were fortunate not to get 10-runned by the Maroons.
Derek Schwab started on the mound for the Streaks and took the loss. He went two innings, allowing five runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out two. Nate Olin followed on the hill, pitching one scoreless inning before failing to get out of the next. He allowed three runs, walking six and striking out two. Six of Moline's eight runs were earned as errors also were a problem for the Streaks.
Nick Milligan and Caleb Weaver eventually shut down the Maroons' attack and allowed GHS to play all seven innings.
Moline limited the Streaks to five hits. Bo Merritt had two hits and Tanner Libby, Brian Gernant and Alex Lozano had one apiece. All of GHS' hits were singles.
Painful split for Streaks varsity
4/24 - (QUINCY) Although they wouldn't realize it until late Saturday, the GHS varsity baseball missed a chance to put themselves into first place in the Western Big 6, Friday night. Spanking Quincy 17-2 in the opener, the Streaks fell flat in the nightcap to lose 9-3 and fall to 4-2 in league play.
Thanks to a split for league-leading Rock Island, Saturday, with United Township, the Streaks now find themselves tied with Moline at 4-2 and one-game back in the standings. For the Streaks (4-2, 15-4), the remaining schedule will give them a chance to go head-to-head with both Moline and Rocky.
GHS scored in each inning of the first game. They scored six in the third and five in the fifth to seal the five-inning victory.
Mark Zhorne, Caleb Weaver, Rogue Schott, Alex Lozano and Jordan Sadiq had two hits apiece to lead the Streaks. Schott drove in four runs. He had a three-run homer in the fifth.

Tanner Libby took the pitching loss,  his first of the season, allowing seven runs in five innings.
GHS had six hits in the nightcap, with Zhorne collecting two. Sadiq had a two-run double in the fourth for the Streaks.
Tuesday, the Streaks are scheduled to travel to Washington for a non-conference game.
Streaks roll past Peoria Woodruff
4/23 - (PEORIA) GHS' varsity baseball team scored in each of the first five innings en route to an 11-1 non-conference victory over Peoria Woodruff, Thursday.
Sophomore Nick Milligan and junior Jake Taylor combined for a one-hitter. Milligan earned the pitching victory while striking out four. Woodruff's only run came in the bottom of fourth.
The Streaks scored two in the first inning, four in the second and solo runs in the third and fourth before a three-run fifth sealed the five-inning win.

With the victory, the GHS varsity moved to 14-3 on the season. They will travel to Quincy Friday for a Western Big 6 doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
Sweep keeps Streaks in WB 6 race
4/18 - Complete game pitching victories by Rogue Schott and Tanner Libby helped GHS' varsity baseball team to a 2-0, 5-1 doubleheader sweep of United Township, Saturday.
With the wins, Coach Arnie Gonzalez' Streaks moved to 3-1 in league play and 13-3 on the season. In the conference race, depending on the results of the Moline vs. Rock Island
doubleheader, the Streaks could be either tied for first or one game back in the standings heading into the third conference weekend.
In the first game, GHS scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Schott scattered five hits in the opener, walking none and striking out seven. U.T. starting pitcher Dylan Merrill threw two innings and reliever Todd Dempsey pitched the rest of the way, taking the loss. They combined to allow just four hits.
The Streaks' Nate Olin walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, advanced to second on Jacob Milligan's sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on a ground out and

scored a wild pitch. A two-out double by Caleb Weaver set up the insurance run as Schott singled him in.
Schott finished with two hits to lead the Streaks in the opener. Olin and Weaver each collected one hit.
In the nightcap, Libby allowed just four hits to the Panthers and was touched for a solo unearned run in the fifth. A two-out single and a pair of  fielding errors allowed U.T.'s Davian Giles to score.

Alleman hands Streaks another loss
4/15 - Usually in the non-conference games between Western Big 6 rivals the teams do not use their top two pitchers and often that means a lot scoring. Wednesday, Alleman got the memo, but GHS' varsity apparently didn't as the Streaks were limited to just a pair of runs in a 7-2 loss.
With the loss, the GHS varsity fell to 10-3 on the season and 1-2 against Alleman for the season.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Streaks answered with two in the second. That lead was short-lived, however, as Alleman scored five runs in the third inning to regain a lead they would not relinquish. In the fateful third, a couple of GHS fielding errors fueled the outburst.
Streak starting pitcher Derek Schwab took the loss. He went on to toss three scoreless innings after the third, but it wasn't enough as his team provided no offensive punch. Alleman used three pitchers in the contest. Jacob Sharp threw just one inning, but got the win in relief. Ben Carlin then shut the Streaks down for four innings, despite walking four.

Libby was 3-for-3 at the plate and Olin, Zhorne and Derek Schwab each contributed two hits.
Streaks slip past Limestone

With the victory, the GHS varsity moved to 9-1 on the season. They will open Western Big 6 play Saturday at Alleman.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Limestone got a lead-off single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored the tying run.

The Streaks led 10-1 in the contest before watching East Peoria score four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to trim the deficit. The Raiders even had the potential tying the winning runs on base when the final out was recorded.
With the non-conference win, the GHS varsity moved to 5-1 on the season. East Peoria dropped to 0-4.
