Streaks
sweep Blue Devils |
4/26 - It was an important
doubleheader for GHS' varsity baseball team. Though it did
not have conference title implications, Coach Arnie Gonzalez
wanted to make sure his young team gain some confidence for
the schedule ahead. The Streaks did just that, beating
Quincy twice 4-2 and 9-0, here Saturday. The day did not
start out well the home team as they surrendered a run to
Quincy in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Kyle
Hunter had to leave the mound after two batters and Mark
Mason, the likely starter for game two had to be pressed
into immediate action. The senior responded, pitching four and
two-thirds innings to pick up the win. He allowed no earned
runs. |
 |
Caleb Diefendorf and Caleb Weaver both relieved and
Weaver finished the final two innings for the save. GHS'
boys scored a solo run in their side of the first inning on
an RBI single by Brian Gernant. Jacob Milligan's two-out
double in the second inning drove in two runs and gave the
Streaks a lead they would hang on to the rest of the way.
Kyle McGee hit a no-doubt solo homerun in the fourth for the
team's fourth run. Quincy pushed a run across in the seventh
and threatened to tie the contest, but Weaver induced a
ground out with two men on for the final out. GHS had
numerous opportunities to wide the margin in the opener,
collecting 11 hits, but they stranded nine baserunners.
McGee led the charge with three hits. Tanner Libby and
Milligan had two apiece. Rogue Schott, Austin Shearer,
Gernant and Blake Carr added one each. In the nightcap,
Libby enjoyed early offensive support as he mowed down
Quincy batters for a complete game shutout. The big
righthander struck out nine, while scattering five hits. He
only walked one. GHS scored two runs in the first inning as
McGee hit his |
|
second homer of
the day with a man on. In the second inning, the Streaks
broke it wide open with five more runs. Schott and McGee
both had doubles in the frame. After
taking that 7-0 run lead, GHS only scored solo runs in the
third and fourth. Coach Gonzalez inserted a number of
substitutes and the Streaks went down in order in the final
two at bats. However, the early production was more than
enough and Libby was "on" the GHS defense player errorless
ball. McGee and Weaver led the Streaks at the plate in the
nightcap with two hits apiece. Milligan, Libby, Schott, Ben
Schneider and Shearer had one each. Monday, the Streaks, now
4-4 in the Western Big 6 and 9-10 overall, travel to Geneseo
for a non-conference match-up. |

| Rain
does not stop Richwoods' bats |
4/24 - (PEORIA) The start of
GHS' varsity baseball game at Peoria Richwoods Thursday was
delayed but some rain moving through the area, but when it
stopped, Richwoods broke out their big sticks early for a
10-2 non-conference victory. With the loss, the Streaks fell
to 7-10 on the season. Richwoods improved to 9-7. The two
teams are potential opponents in the IHSA Regional to be
hosted by the Knights. The Streaks jumped out to a quick 1-0
lead in the top of the first inning before Richwoods plated
four in the bottom of the frame to take contol of the
contest. They added another three in the third for a 7-1
advantage. Three more runs in the fifth made it 10-1 before
GHS pushed across another run in the sixth. Austin Shearer
took the pitching loss for GHS. He surrendered seven runs,
walked three and struck out one. Jake Milligan pitched the
two innings and Kyle Hunter tossed one. Some more rain fell
during the game to make conditions a bit sloppy, but the
teams were able to finish. Offensively, the
Streaks had seven hits in the contest. Hunter was 2 for 3.
Caleb Weaver drove in a run and Kyle McGee had a double.
Saturday, the GHS varsity will try, weather-permitting, to
play their conference doubleheader at home against Quincy. |

Streaks
get swept by U.T. |
|
4/19 - (EAST MOLINE) Hopes for a conference
championship faded Saturday for the GHS varsity baseball
team as they suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hand of
United Township. The Panthers won 11-1 and 6-4. With the
losses, the GHS boys fell to 2-4 in Western Big 6 play and
7-9, overall. Despite lopsided final score, the first game
was close until the fifth inning. Jake Milligan started on
the mound for the Streaks and allowed only three runs on
four hits, before the relief pitching faltered in the late
innings. U.T.'s Garrett Yount kept the GHS offense at bay in
the contest. The Streaks' lone run came on a homerun by Kyle
Hunter. GHS had only two hits. In the second game, the Panthers' Adam Becht struck out
eight of the first 10 GHS batters and picked up the win. The
Streaks rallied from a 6-1 deficit and threatened to either

Limestone on Thursday. |
| Streaks rally
past Woodruff |
4/17 - After falling behind 3-0
against Peoria Woodruff, Thursday, the GHS varsity baseball
team got their sluggish offense in gear to earn a
come-from-behind 4-3 victory. Caleb Weaver delivered the
final blow, a two-out bases loaded single up the middle to
plate |
 |
two runs in the bottom
of the seventh and give the Streaks the win. The non-conference victory evened the GHS
varsity record at 7-7, heading into Saturday's key Western
Big 6 doubleheader at United Township. Mark Mason pitched
seven solid innings, giving the Streaks something they have
been lacking in mid-week games. The senior lefty scattered
seven hits, struck out seven and walked only one to pick up
the win. Woodruff took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as
Cody Walker doubled in Alex Gutierrez with the Warriors'
first run. In the top of the fifth, Woodruff tacked on two
more runs. Kym Jackson delivered a two-out bases loaded
single to drive in both runs. GHS finally got on the
scoreboard against Woodruff's Mitch Hidden when Jacob
Milligan doubled with two out and scored on Kyle McGee's
|
|
single. Another
run came in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Weaver
reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Tanner Libby's
double. In the seventh, Milligan reached on
an error with one out. McGee singled and Kyle Hunter
sacrificed the two runners into scoring position. Brian
Gernant drew an intentional walk to load the bases and
Weaver came through to end the contest. Both teams had seven

the plate. |

Morton spanks varsity Streaks |
4/15 - (MORTON) GHS' varsity
baseball team was limited to just two hits in a 10-0 six
inning loss at Morton, Tuesday. Jake Milligan doubled to
lead off the game, but the next Streak hit would not come
until the third inning. Morton, on the other hand, scored in
double digits with nine hits. They also received nine walks
from four GHS pitchers. Caleb Diefendorf, who started the
game on the mound for the Streaks took the loss, working 1
1/3 innings and allowing four runs. Also seeing action on
the mound for the Streaks was Michael Jordan, Brian Gernant

fourth, one in the fifth and two to end the game in the
sixth. After Milligan's double Austin Shearer had the only
other hit, a single. Thursday, the Streaks will host Peoria

|
Streaks split with Alleman |
4/14 - Once again, the GHS
varsity baseball team proved to be generous hosts as they
split their second Western Big 6 doubleheader at home,
Monday. The Streaks topped Alleman 4-3 in the opener, but
allowed the Pioneers salvage the nightcap 7-5. GHS' varsity
saw their season record evened at 6-6 and their league mark

scoreless seventh. GHS out-hit Alleman 9-6 in the opener.
Hunter and McGee had two hits apiece and Weaver, Gernant,

a solo run in the second to take the lead. They added two
more in the third and solo runs in the fourth and seventh
innings. Gernant drove in two runs. Hunter and Weaver had
two hits each. Both the Streaks and Pioneers had nine hits
in the nightcap. In addition to Hunter and Weaver, Mason,
Gernant, T.J. Scott, Schott and Jake Milligan all had one
hit apiece. Milligan took the pitching loss. On Tuesday, the
Streaks will travel to Morton for a non-conference game with
the Potters. |
|
|
| Alleman
tops GHS in non-conference |
4/7- (MOLINE) Perhaps the best
thing about Monday's game for the GHS varsity baseball team
was that it did not count in the Western Big 6 standings.
Alleman thumped the Streaks 12-0 in five innings.
GHS was limited to just two hits in the contest, while
Alleman put up some serious offense. The
Pioneers' Elliot Kelso hit two homeruns and
collected six RBI.
Austin Shearer took
the pitching loss and the brunt of Alleman's fury as GHS tried not to dip into
the relief pitching pool with a number of games scheduled this week.
With the loss, the Streaks fell to 5-5 on
the season. They will host the Pioneers
Saturday in a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader.
|
| Streaks split
first league test |
4/5 - GHS' varsity baseball
team had hoped to get off to a strong start in Western Big 6
play, Saturday, but had to settle for a split with rival
Rock Island. The Streaks lost their comfortable lead, but
rallied back to beat the Rocks 9-7 in the opener and then
fell 9-5 in the nightcap. Streak starting pitcher Kyle
Hunter was cruising along with a 4-0 through four innings in
the |
opener, before
allowing a couple of baserunners in the
fifth. With two out, the GHS boys had a chance to dodge the
bullet, but a fielding error prolonged the inning, which
eventually ended with six runs - the final three of which
came on Cameron Mandel's three-run homer. GHS fought back in
the bottom of the frame to score five. Hunter connected for
a two-run homer to give the Streaks their eighth and ninth
runs. Rocky scored one more run in their final at bat
against reliever Caleb Weaver, but the righthander ended the
contest with three straight strikeouts. |
 |
|
Hunter got the
pitching victory, allowing only three hits in six innings

Hunter
takes command |
3/29 - GHS' varsity baseball
team got a strong pitching performance from senior ace Kyle
Hunter and exploded for a six-run outburst to dominate
Streator in six innings 10-0, Saturday. Hunter struck out 13
Bulldog batters and combined with Mark Mason for a
six-inning no-hitter. |
 |
With the win, the Streaks finish this
year's Streaks Invite with a 2-1 mark. They also improved
their season record to 4-3. GHS' varsity will play next
Thursday against Limestone at O'Brien Field in Peoria.
Saturday's match-up with Streator looked to be a pitcher's duel early as
neither team scored and the Streaks could only muster up one
hit through three innings, but in the fourth things changed.
With two out in the fourth, GHS scored six runs. Rogue Schott drove in the
first run and Austin Shearer, Kyle McGee, Hunter and Caleb
Weaver also got into the act. The Streaks added two more
runs in the fifth on a two-out two-run single by Blake
|
|

on the 10-run rule. GHS finished with 11 hits in the

victory. He allowed solo runs in the first and second
innings, but posted a scoreless third while striking out
