Streaks sweep Blue Devils
4/26 - It was an important doubleheader for GHS' varsity baseball team. Though it did not have conference title implications, Coach Arnie Gonzalez wanted to make sure his young team gain some confidence for the schedule ahead. The Streaks did just that, beating Quincy twice 4-2 and 9-0, here Saturday.
The day did not start out well the home team as they surrendered a run to Quincy in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Kyle Hunter had to leave the mound after two batters and Mark Mason, the likely starter for game two had to be pressed into immediate action. The senior responded, pitching four and two-thirds innings to pick up the win. He allowed no earned runs.
Caleb Diefendorf and Caleb Weaver both relieved and Weaver finished the final two innings for the save.
GHS' boys scored a solo run in their side of the first inning on an RBI single by Brian Gernant. Jacob Milligan's two-out double in the second inning drove in two runs and gave the Streaks a lead they would hang on to the rest of the way. Kyle McGee hit a no-doubt solo homerun in the fourth for the team's fourth run.
Quincy pushed a run across in the seventh and threatened to tie the contest, but Weaver induced a ground out with two men on for the final out.
GHS had numerous opportunities to wide the margin in the opener, collecting 11 hits, but they stranded nine baserunners. McGee led the charge with three hits. Tanner Libby and Milligan had two apiece. Rogue Schott, Austin Shearer, Gernant and Blake Carr added one each.
In the nightcap, Libby enjoyed early offensive support as he mowed down Quincy batters for a complete game shutout. The big righthander struck out nine, while scattering five hits. He only walked one.
GHS scored two runs in the first inning as McGee hit his
second homer of the day with a man on. In the second inning, the Streaks broke it wide open with five more runs. Schott and McGee both had doubles in the frame.
After taking that 7-0 run lead, GHS only scored solo runs in the third and fourth. Coach Gonzalez inserted a number of substitutes and the Streaks went down in order in the final two at bats. However, the early production was more than enough and Libby was "on" the GHS defense player errorless ball.
McGee and Weaver led the Streaks at the plate in the nightcap with two hits apiece. Milligan, Libby, Schott, Ben Schneider and Shearer had one each.
Monday, the Streaks, now 4-4 in the Western Big 6 and 9-10 overall, travel to Geneseo for a non-conference match-up.
Rain does not stop Richwoods' bats
4/24 - (PEORIA) The start of GHS' varsity baseball game at Peoria Richwoods Thursday was delayed but some rain moving through the area, but when it stopped, Richwoods broke out their big sticks early for a 10-2 non-conference victory.
With the loss, the Streaks fell to 7-10 on the season. Richwoods improved to 9-7. The two teams are potential opponents in the IHSA Regional to be hosted by the Knights.
The Streaks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Richwoods plated four in the bottom of the frame to take contol of the contest. They added another three in the third for a 7-1 advantage. Three more runs in the fifth made it 10-1 before GHS pushed across another run in the sixth. Austin Shearer took the pitching loss for GHS. He surrendered seven runs, walked three and struck out one. Jake Milligan pitched the two innings and Kyle Hunter tossed one.
Some more rain fell during the game to make conditions a bit sloppy, but the teams were able to finish. Offensively, the Streaks had seven hits in the contest. Hunter was 2 for 3. Caleb Weaver drove in a run and Kyle McGee had a double.
Saturday, the GHS varsity will try, weather-permitting, to play their conference doubleheader at home against Quincy.

With the losses, the GHS boys fell to 2-4 in Western Big 6 play and 7-9, overall.
Despite lopsided final score, the first game was close until the fifth inning. U.T.'s Garrett Yount kept the GHS offense at bay in the contest. The Streaks' lone run came on a homerun by Kyle Hunter. GHS had only two hits.

two runs in the bottom of the seventh and give the Streaks the win.
The non-conference victory evened the GHS varsity record at 7-7, heading into Saturday's key Western Big 6 doubleheader at United Township.

Woodruff took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Cody Walker doubled in Alex Gutierrez with the Warriors' first run. In the top of the fifth, Woodruff tacked on two more runs. Kym Jackson delivered a two-out bases loaded single to drive in both runs.
GHS finally got on the scoreboard against Woodruff's Mitch Hidden when Jacob Milligan doubled with two out and scored on Kyle McGee's
single. Another run came in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Weaver reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Tanner Libby's double.
In the seventh, Milligan reached on an error with one out. McGee singled and Kyle Hunter sacrificed the two runners into scoring position. Brian Gernant drew an intentional walk to load the bases and Weaver came through to end the contest.

Alleman tops GHS in non-conference
4/7- (MOLINE) Perhaps the best thing about Monday's game for the GHS varsity baseball team was that it did not count in the Western Big 6 standings. Alleman thumped the Streaks 12-0 in five innings.
GHS was limited to just two hits in the contest, while Alleman put up some serious offense. The Pioneers' Elliot Kelso hit two homeruns and collected six RBI.
