A.J. Fields is selected
M.V.P. |
Senior catcher A.J. Fields
has been selected by his teammates as the 2007 Bednar Award winner. The award is given
annually to the Most Valuable Player for the GHS
varsity baseball team. The Award is named in
honor of Chuck Bednar, who coached the Silver Streaks
in the 1940's and 50's. The long-time coach helped
establish the rich baseball tradition at the school
and took a couple of
teams to the State finals.
Fields earned Western Big 6 All-Conference honors and was one of
the Streaks' top hitters. He has also received special mention on
some of the All-State lists. |

IHSA Regional
Rough start sinks Streaks |
5/28 - With the waiting over,
it looked like GHS' varsity baseball team still wasn't ready for
Monday's IHSA Regional final. Rock Island jumped out to a
three-run lead in the first inning and never let go en route
to a 7-5 over over the frustrated Streaks. Rain moved
Saturday's final to Monday and this time the weather
cooperated, but things didn't click for coach Arnie
Gonzalez' GHS crew, especially in the opening inning. With
the first Rocky |
batter
reaching on an error, bloop single
and another error paved the way to three unearned runs off
Streak starting pitcher Neil VanderWyst. GHS responded with
a solo run in their side of the first when Robbie Hinkle
opened the frame with a line-drive homer over the leftfield
fence. The score stayed the same until the Streaks cut the
deficit to 3-2 with another run in the fourth. Chad Humes
reached on an error and Kyle Hunter singled. Chris Elliott
singled in Humes, but a doubleplay and ground out ended what
looked to be promising uprising with only one run crossing
the plate. Rock Island increased their lead to 5-2 with a
pair of runs in the top of the fifth. A |
 |
|
lead-off double
by Tyler Radosevich and single by Andrew Ledford scored the
first run and chased VanderWyst from the mound. The next
Rocky hitter singled to right off Hunter to score another
run, but the Streak lefty got out of the inning with no
further damage. With two outs in the seventh inning, Rock
Island's David Johnson, who had struck out three consecutive
times, drew a walk. Tyler Allison doubled down the line and VandyGriff got what turned out to be a big clutch hit.
VandyGriff doubled to left, driving in two runs and giving
the Rocks a commanding 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the
seventh. The Streaks, who loaded the bases with no outs in
the sixth, only to be victimized by a big doubleplay,
mounted one last rally in their final at bats. With one out,
Kyle McGee and Hinkle |
 |
drew
walks. A fielder's choice left runners on the corners
with two outs. A.J. Fields then
rocketed a "no doubt" three-run homer over the
leftfield fence to instantly cut the Rocks' lead to just two
runs. Humes doubled to being the tying run to the plate, but deep
fly-out to left ended the threat and the game. VandyGriff
went the distance to earn the win for Rock Island. He
allowed seven hits and walked four. VanderWyst took the
loss, giving up two earned runs and five total. He struck
out five. Hunter pitched three innings, allowing two runs
and striking out five. |
|
Rocky out-hit the Streaks 11 to 7 in
the contest. Allison led the Rocks with three singles. Vandy
Griff had two doubles and two RBI's and Radosevich, two more
hits, including a double. GHS was led by Fields and Elliott
with two hits apiece. Hinkle, Humes and Hunter each chipped
in one. With the win, Rock Island with advance to the
Sectional at Augustana. They will take on Limestone, an 8-6
winner over Alleman, on Thursday. GHS' boys end their season
with a 20-9 record. |

IHSA Regional
Streaks
shut out Panthers |
5/23 - Kyle Hunter did a
masterful job on the mound for the GHS varsity baseball team
as they defeated United Township 8-0, here Wednesday, in the
IHSA Regional opener. The junior lefthander allowed only
four hits in six innings and struck out 12, while his team
provided 11-hits of offense. Hunter had cruised along with
no U.T. baserunners getting into scoring |
position
until the fifth when he faced a bases-loaded-no-out
situation. An infield pop-up and two strikeouts
preserved the shutout. Robbie Hinkle came in to pitch
the top of the seventh and walked two, but struck out
three to end the game.
Offensively, coach Arnie Gonzalez' charges got after it
right away. They plated a run with out in the bottom of the
first. A.J. Fields was intentionally walked and Chad Humes
and Hunter followed with singles. Hunter's RBI turned out to
be the game-winner. In the
second inning, the Streaks added three more runs. Zach
Ricketts led off with a single, Jake Scott sacrificed
Ricketts into scoring position, Kyle McGee singled and
Robbie Hinkle drove |
 |
|
in Ricketts. An
error on Hinkle's ball hit to leftfield plated McGee. GHS added a
solo run in the fourth to make it 5-0. McGee was hit by a
pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth,
the Streaks pretty much put things away as they scored three
more runs. Four consecutive hits to open the frame did big
damage. Humes and Ricketts both had doubles in the uprising.
GHS pounded out 11 hits, including a three-for-three effort
by Humes. A.J. Fields drew four intentional walks - possibly
a GHS varsity single game record. Hunter, Chris Elliott and
Ricketts had two hits apiece. McGee and Hinkle added one
each. Ryan Webb had two hits for United Township. With the win, the Streaks, now 20-8 on the season,
will face either Rock Island or Geneseo Saturday afternoon
in the Regional final. The Rocks and Maple Leafs will meet
Thursday at 4:30 p.m. |

Extra-inning victory ends
regular season |
5/21 - (PERU) In what was
essentially a "tune-up" before the start of Regionals this
week, the Silver Streaks won an exciting 6-5 eight-inning
JV contest at LaSalle-Peru, Monday. The top seeds in their
respective Regionals and slated to play Wednesday, the teams
withheld their top pitchers from competition, but still got
respectable performances.
Sophomore Rogue Schott threw five scoreless innings for the
Streaks and pretty much shutdown L-P's offense. He struck
out six and allowed only one hit. Mark Mason passed a 3-1 lead
along to Pat Messenger, who struggled a bit in seventh as
the Cavaliers tied the score 3-3 with two runs. After the
Streaks scored three in the top of the eighth, Messenger was
touched for two more runs before sophomore Tanner Libby came on
in relief to save the victory. Libby got final three outs -
two of them by strikeout. Robbie
Hinkle led-off the game with a homerun to highlight a GHS
offense missing some big bats. Seniors A.J. Fields, Jake
Scott, Zach Ricketts, Chad Humes and Chris "Kong" Elliott were left back in
Galesburg to attend Awards Night and receive awards and
scholarships. Libby made the most of
his start in leftfield as he led the Streaks with three hits
on the night. One of them was a double. Libby was the only
GHS player player with multiple hits. Hinkle, Mark Mason,
Billy Herrin, Messenger, Kyle Hunter and Jake Milligan all
had one hit apiece. GHS drew eight walks from L-P pitchers. Wednesday, everyone will be back in the fold
for the Streaks as they host the Regional at Sundberg Field.
Their first opponent will be a familiar one in United
Township. GHS swept the Panthers in a conference
doubleheader, but lost a one-run decision at East Moline.
The Thursday Regional match-up with feature Geneseo against
Rock Island. Winners from the two semi-finals will meet
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. to decide the Regional
championship. |

Streaks go
3-0 in annual Classic |
5/19 - GHS' varsity baseball
team built a big early lead and then sat on it for a 8-5
victory over Dunlap in the final game of the 2007 Streaks
Classic, Saturday night. With the win, the Streaks finish
the Classic 3-0 and run their season record to 19-8. Senior
Billy Herrin pitched six innings to pick up the win. He was
touched for nine hits and survived a potential Eagle rally.
Robbie Hinkle pitched a scoreless three-up-three-down
seventh. GHS scored two runs in the first inning and never
trailed. Hinkle singled and scored on a double by
Billy Herrin. A.J. Fields brought Herrin home on a sacrifice
fly. In the second inning the Streaks added two more runs to
their lead and in the third they plated four more to take an
8-1 advantage. Fields led off the frame with a line drive
homer over to dead centerfield. GHS had five hits in that
rally. GHS had runners in scoring position in each inning
after that, but could not push any more across. The Streaks
finished with 13 hits. Fields and Jake Scott were both
three-for-three at the plate to lead the effort. Zach
Ricketts chipped in two more hits and Hinkle, Herrin, Chad Humes, Kyle Hunter and Kyle McGee, one apiece. GHS will
close the regular season Monday at LaSalle-Peru and then
gear up to host the IHSA Regional. The Streaks' first
opponent in the Regional will be United Township on
Wednesday. If they win that contest, they will play Saturday
afternoon in the Regional championship game. |

Elliott's bat leads Streaks to
rout |
5/19 - Chris "Kong" Elliott had
the type of game most player only dream of, Saturday,
against Champaign Central. The GHS slugging firstbaseman
belted two homeruns - a three-run shot and a grand slam -
and had a sacrifice fly to drive in eight runs in a 14-2 win
over the Maroons. With the win, the Streaks moved to 18-8 on
the season and 2-0 in this year's Streaks Classic. They will
face Dunlap in the tournament's finale Saturday night at 7
p.m. or after. Neil VanderWyst earned the pitching victory
in the five-inning contest. The senior allowed only two runs
on eight hits. He struck out three. Central scored solo runs
in the fourth and fifth frames. GHS jumped out to a 4-0 lead
in the first inning and never looked back. They added four
more in the third and six in the fourth for their 14-run
total. Elliott hit his three-run blast in the third and his
grand slam in the fourth. The Streaks pounded out 15 hits.
Robbie Hinkle was three-for-three. Billy Herrin, A.J.
Fields, Kyle Hunter, Elliott and Jake Scott had two hits
apiece. Brian Gernant and Chad Humes had the other Streak
hits. Humes had a double and Hunter, a triple. |
| Streaks
beat Springfield S.E. in Classic |
5/18 - A.J. Fields hit a
three-run homer and Kyle Hunter struck out 10 batters to
propel the GHS varsity baseball team to a 4-1 victory over
Springfield Southeast in Friday's nightcap for the 2007
Streaks Classic. With the win, the Streaks move to 17-8 on
the season. They will play two more games Saturday in the
12-team Classic. Their first game will be at 11 a.m. against
Champaign Central and once again they will play the nightcap
at 7 p.m. against Dunlap. Fields' homerun broke a scoreless
tie in the bottom of the third inning. Kyle McGee and Hunter
both singled to put two men and with two outs, Fields belted
one over the leftfield fence. The score remained 3-0 until
the Streaks pushed across another run in the sixth. Fields
singled to open the inning. Courtesy runner Jake Milligan
stole second and advanced to third on a wild pick-off throw
to second. Zach Ricketts missed a suicide squeeze bunt, but
Milligan was able to get back to third and then score a
little later on an RBI ground out by Ricketts. Southeast put
together three straight hits to score their only run in the
top of the seventh off Streak relief pitcher Tanner Libby.
Robbie Hinkle then came on to get the final three outs for
the save. Hunter, GHS' starting pitcher, was masterful in
his five innings of work. He faced only one batter over the
minimum as he allowed just baserunner on one hit. The
Streaks out-hit Southeast 9 to 4 in the contest. Hunter,
Fields and Jake Scott all had two hits apiece to lead the
GHS attack. Billy Herrin, Robbie Hinkle and McGee added one
hit each. |

Rough
start dooms Streaks |
5/17 - (PEORIA) Peoria
Richwoods did all their scoring early and then hung on in
dramatic fashion, Thursday, as they knocked off the GHS
varsity baseball team 7-5. With the non-conference loss, the
Streaks fell to 16-8 on the season. They will get a chance
to bounce back, however, as they host the annual Streaks
Classic this weekend. They will open with Springfield
Southeast in the 8 p.m. game Friday.
Richwoods got to GHS
starting pitcher Zach Ricketts for seven runs in the first
two innings. Some |
 |
shaky Streak defense
didn't help as the Knights plated four in the first
and three in the second. After that, however, Richwoods managed just one hit off
Ricketts. Billy Herrin tossed a scoreless sixth in relief.
The Streaks had three hits in the first two innings and even
had two men in scoring position, but it was not until the
third before they broke through with some runs. Chad Humes
accomplished that task with one swing of the bat. The senior
lined a two-run homer over the rightfield fence. In the
fifth inning, the Streaks closed the gap to two runs with a
three-run outburst. Humes led off with a single and
|
|
A.J.
Fields and Kyle Hunter did the same to load the bases. Chris
Elliott grounded out to score Humes and Fields scored on a
balk. The final GHS run was driven in by Ricketts with
another ground out. The final two at bats for the Streaks
were painful as they started what looked like promising
rallies in each frame, only to see five baserunners
stranded. In the sixth, Kyle McGee doubled to lead off the
inning. Robbie Hinkle then reached on a error to put runners
at the corners with no out. A pick-off play got the first
out for the Knights, but Herrin reached on a hit-by-pitch. A
ground out to the pitcher and an infield pop-up got
Richwoods out of the jam. In the seventh, GHS loaded the
bases with no outs, but then suffered three straight
strikeouts to end the contest. Jamie Schmitt came on in
relief for the Knights with the bases loaded and earned the
save. Starter Ben Hogan got the victory. GHS out-hit Richwoods 10 to 8. Hunter and Humes had three hits apiece to
lead the Streaks. McGee had two hits and Fields and
Ricketts, one each. |

Streaks win 'Senior Day'
thriller |
5/10 - The ending of Thursday's
non-conference game between Rock Island and the GHS varsity
baseball team was a bit more exciting than Streak head coach
Arnie Gonzalez might have liked, but the final result was a
positive. GHS' boys stopped Rocky's late rally just short
for a 7-6 decision. With the win, the Streaks moved to 15-6
on the season. Rock Island, the host of Saturday's |
 |
Western
Big 6 doubleheader, fell to 14-12. The doubleheader
will begin at 10 a.m. at Rock Island High School. Mark Mason
picked up the pitching victory for the Streaks. He tossed
four innings and allowed three runs, but saw his team rally
for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3
lead. They never trailed after that. Another three-run
inning in the fifth gave GHS a 7-3 lead going into the
seventh inning. Pat Messenger pitched two scoreless innings
of relief in the fifth and sixth, but ran into some trouble
in the seventh. With a run in, nobody out and two runners on
base, Rogue Schott took the mound in an attempt to get the
save. The save proved to be a hard-earned one as Schott
allowed two more hits and hit a batter to load the bases.
Finally, two |
|
strikeouts and a
pop-up ended the contest. Rocky left the bases load with the
potential tying run on third. The Streaks out-hit Rocky 12 to 7 in the contest,
with four of the Rocks' hits coming in their final at bats.
Rock Island broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third inning by
pushing two runs across. Two of the visitors' first three
runs were scored on sacrifice flies. Despite hitting the
ball hard each inning, GHS could only muster one run until
the fourth-inning rally. Three consecutive singles and a
double by A.J. Fields yielded two runs. A sacrifice fly by
Kyle McGee gave the Streaks' the go-ahead run. In the fifth,
back-to-back doubles by Chris Elliott and Kyle Hunter fueled
the next rally. Hunter, Jake Scott, Elliott and Robbie
Hinkle all had two hits in the contest. Hunter drove in two
runs. Mason, Messenger, Zach Ricketts and Fields had one hit
each. |

|
| Streaks' bats
potent in win over PND |
5/8 - GHS' varsity baseball
team pounded out 12 hits and scored nine runs in a 9-2
non-conference victory over a good Peoria Notre Dame squad,
here Tuesday. With the win, the Streaks moved their season
record to 14-6. Notre Dame fell to 15-7. Billy Herrin
pitched into the fifth inning to get the win for GHS. Neil VanderWyst finished the
|
fifth and
tossed the sixth before yielding the bump for Rogue Schott, who retired the Irish in
order in the seventh. Herrin allowed four hits, struck out
five and walked four. The Streaks grabbed the lead early in
the contest and never trailed. Robbie Hinkle was hit by a
pitch to lead-off the bottom of the first and eventually
scored on an RBI single by Chad Humes. GHS added solo runs
in the third and fourth frames. Kyle Hunter doubled in a run
in the third and Kyle McGee had a sacrifice fly in the
fourth. Notre Dame got both their runs in the top of the
fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2. GHS responded immediately
with two in the bottom of the inning. Humes led-off with a
single and scored on a two-out |
 |
|
triple by Chris
Elliott. A single by Zach Ricketts brought home Elliott. The Streaks
added four runs in the sixth to put the contest away.
Two-run doubles by A.J. Fields and Elliott were the key
blows. Elliott finished with three hits and three RBI's.
Ricketts also had three hits and one RBI. Humes had a pair
of singles and Herrin, Fields, Hunter and Jake Scott had one
hit apiece. Thursday, the GHS
varsity will take on Rock Island in a non-conference game.
It will be Senior Day at the ballpark. |

| Streaks split
doubleheader with Quincy |
4/28 - (QUINCY) GHS' varsity
baseball team wanted a sweep, but had to settle for a split
with last-place Quincy, Saturday. The Streaks pounded out 17
hits and scored a 14-7 win over the Blue Devils in the
opener. In the nightcap, a four-run inning and outstanding
pitching from Mitch Fairley helped Quincy post a 5-1 win.
With the split, the GHS varsity moved to 4-2 in Western Big
6 play and 11-3, overall. The Streaks broke away from a 7-7
deadlock in the opener and put away the Blue Devils. Neil VanderWyst picked up the pitching victory in relief. He shut
down Quincy in the final two innings. Eight walks and two
homeruns helped the Blue Devils score seven runs on only
three total hits. In the second game, A.J. Fields got three
hits off Quincy's Fairley, but unfortunately the Streaks
only got one more hit. Fairley struck out 13 GHS batters.
Zach Ricketts took the pitching loss as Quincy scored four
runs in the fifth inning. |
| Streaks play
at new Busch Stadium |
5/6 - (ST. LOUIS) Sunday's GHS
vs. O'Fallon varsity baseball game played after the St.
Louis Cardinals vs. Houston Astros game was one of those
contests that was more about getting people in the game than
playing to win. Twenty-three Streaks saw action on the major
league field as they dropped a nine-inning non-conference
contest to O'Fallon 12-3. The Panthers, playing the home
team, scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and
led the rest of the way. The Streaks cut the score to 5-2
with a pair of runs scored in a four-hit inning, but that
was as close as they would get. Pat Messenger, the GHS
starter took the loss the mound as the Streaks used a line
of pitchers that ended with freshman Bo Merritt in the
eighth. Kyle Hunter had two hits to lead GHS at the plate.
The loss dropped the Streaks to 13-6. Tuesday, they will
return to action at home against Peoria Notre Dame. |
|
Split
gives Moline conference title |
5/5 - GHS' varsity baseball
team needed a sweep to keep their Western Big 6 title hopes
alive Saturday against frontrunner Moline. They got a split
and the Maroons clinched the title with an 8-2 league mark.
Moline won the first game of the doubleheader 8-2 and then
got 10-runned by the Streaks in six innings in the nightcap
13-3. With the split, GHS' varsity fell to 5-3 in conference
play and 13-5 overall. In the the opener, Moline scored five
runs in the third inning to grab a 5-0 lead. The Maroons
never looked back. They added one in the fifth and two more
in the seventh as they pounded out 13 hits. Starting pitcher
Kyle Hunter took the loss for the Streaks. He pitched six
inning, allowing six runs on 12 hits and struck out six. GHS
got both their runs in the fourth inning on homeruns by
Hunter and Chris Elliott. Moline's Chris Larsen got the win,
going the distance, allowing five hits and striking out
seven. The nightcap was a close contest until the end when
the Streaks posted a four-run fifth and seven-run sixth
inning to put it away. Moline led 1-0 until GHS took the
lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. The visitors
regained the lead briefly with two runs in the fourth, but
GHS' big finish sent the Maroons home early. Zach Ricketts
pitched five innings and got the win for the Streaks. He
allowed three runs on three hits. A.J. Fields went 3-for-4
with a double to lead the winners. Robbie Hinkle hit a
homerun and had two hits along with teammates Billy Herrin,
Jake Scott and Elliott. |
| Panthers slip
by Streaks in final at bat |
5/3 - (EAST MOLINE) It was
almost like the GHS' varsity baseball team wanted the game
over, Thursday, as the Streaks allowed United Township to
score a run in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7
non-conference victory. Tied 7-7, heading into the bottom of
the seventh, the Streaks' late inning pitching had a
melt-down. A catcher's interference call put a man on for
the Panthers. A walk moved that runner into scoring position
and two wild pitches brought home the winning run. That
"bummer" ending came just minutes after A.J. Fields tied the
score with a grand slam homerun in the top of the seventh
for the Streaks. With the loss, the GHS varsity fell to
12-4. Coach Arnie Gonzalez used the non-conference contest
as an opportunity to get some reserves on the field and four
pitchers saw mound duty. Pat Messenger started the game and
went four innings, allowing just one run. GHS took the lead
3-1 in the top of the fifth to make Messenger eligible for
the win. However, Mark Mason could not hold the lead in
relief in the bottom of the frame. U.T. scored six runs to
take a 7-3 lead. Neil VanderWyst pitched a scoreless sixth
and the Streaks rallied in the seventh. A walk, hit batsman
and single by Chad Humes loaded the bases for Fields, who
"unloaded" them with a grand slam. Billy Herrin pitched the
bottom of the seventh for the loss. Both teams had six hits
in the contest. Humes and Fields had two apiece to lead the
Streaks. Jake Scott and Robbie Hinkle had the other two
hits. Saturday, the GHS varsity will host league-leading
Moline in an important 11 a.m. doubleheader. If the Streaks
can sweep the Maroons they would have a shot at the Western
Big 6 crown. A split, would give Moline the outright title.

Streaks
edge Geneseo in seventh |
4/30 - Despite out-hitting
visiting Geneseo 14-7, it was Mark Mason's single with one
out and the bases loaded in the bottom of seventh inning
that made the difference for GHS' varsity baseball team,
here Monday, in an 8-7 non-conference victory. Not only did
Mason come through in the clutch at the plate, the junior
lefthander picked up the pitching victory in relief of
Streak starter Rogue Schott, who went six and a third
innings for no decision. Monday's win raised GHS' season
record to 12-3. Geneseo saw their record dip to 12-9. |
A
rough start nearly chased Schott from the mound in the first
inning, but Streak coach Arnie Gonzalez showed some
patience and confidence in the sophomore. His teammates also provided some
offensive support. Schott walked the first two batters and
third Geneseo batter got a hit to load the bases. An error
and fielder's choice brought in two runs for the visitors,
before a pop-up and strikeout limited the damage. Geneseo's lead did not last long. Billy Herrin singled to open
the Streaks' side of the first and Robbie Hinkle promptly homered to tie the score. One out later, A.J. Fields singled
and Kyle Hunter's double drove in Fields with the go-ahead
run. Geneseo regained the lead
with two |
 |
|
more runs in the
second, before GHS counted two of their own to again take
the lead. A couple of Maple Leaf errors helped the Streaks
score the tying and go-ahead runs. GHS picked up a solo run
in the third on an RBI single by Kyle McGee and Schott
posted couple of scoreless innings. In the fifth, Geneseo
cut the deficit to 6-5 with a homerun by Craig Rexroth.
Another run in the top of the sixth tied the score, before a
homerun by GHS' Herrin put the home team back in front. A
lead-off homer by Geneseo's Jeff Wagner in the top of the
seventh, again, tied the score and a follow-up double by
Rexroth put the Streaks in jeopardy. Eventually, the Maple
Leafs would put two men in scoring position before a big
defensive play by McGee, snaring a line-drive headed down
the third line, and a strikeout by Mason ended the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Chris Elliott singled with one
out. Hunter was hit by a pitch and Zach Ricketts walked to
load the bases. Mason battled at the plate, fouling off a
tough two-strike pitch on the outside corner before lining a
single right to score Elliott with game-winner. Schott
allowed four earned runs on six hits, walked three and
struck out five. Mason faced three batters and surrender one
hit. Rexroth took the loss for Geneseo in relief. Five
Streak batters had two hits apiece in the contest. They
included: Herrin, Hinkle, Elliott, Hunter and Ricketts.
Mason, Chad Humes, Fields and McGee had one hit apiece.
Thursday, the GHS varsity will travel to East Moline to take
on United Township in a non-conference game. |

|
| Streaks
get 10th victory at Washington |
4/24 - (WASHINGTON) GHS'
varsity baseball team picked up an important non-conference
victory against a good Sectional complex opponent, Tuesday,
as they won 7-2 at Washington.
Sophomore Rogue Schott allowed two runs in the first inning
and they settled down to blank the Panthers through four innings. Neil VanderWyst
then slammed the door on the home team in the fifth, sixth and
seventh to preserve the GHS victory. Schott allowed two hits
and struck out two. VanderWyst set the Panthers down in
order in two of his three innings of work.
The Streaks scored a solo run in the first, two in the
second and four in the third. Robbie Hinkle drove in four
runs as he went 3-for-4 with a double. Chad Humes had two
singles and an RBI. Billy Herrin, Chris Elliott, Kyle
Hunter, Zach Ricketts, Schott and Kyle McGee had one hit
apiece. The Streaks out-hit Washington 11-3 in the contest. Wednesday, if the weather cooperates, the
GHS varsity will travel to Moline for a non-conference game.
|
| Streaks sweep U.T.
Panthers |
4/21 - At times it wasn't artistic, but in
the end the GHS varsity baseball team's performance was
effective, Saturday, as they swept defending Western Big 6
champion United Township 9-3 and 14-8. Hitting was again a
theme for the Streaks as they had 28 hits against the
conference opponent. They had 26 in the league opening
doubleheader against Alleman. This time, however, all the
|
hits
yielded two victories instead of one. With the wins,
GHS moved to 3-1 in conference play and 9-2, overall. Kyle
Hunter went five and two-thirds innings to pick up the
pitching victory in the opener. He allowed just three hits,
but one of them was a three-run homer by U.T.'s Adam Becht,
which accounted for all of the visitor's runs. Hunter had
five strikeouts. Rogue Schott got the final out in the sixth
and pitch a scoreless seventh. GHS' offensive strategy was
to get after things early in the opener. They did just that,
scoring three in the first and six in the second inning for
their nine-run total. U.T. struggled with the gloves in
those two innings, committing five errors. That, |
 |
|
combined with some timely
hitting by the Streaks added up to the big total. A.J. Fields had a double and a three-run homer in the
first two innings and five teammates each drove in one run
apiece. GHS out-hit U.T. 11 to 4 in the contest. Hunter,
Fields, Chris Elliott and Chad Humes had two hits apiece.
Billy Herrin, Robbie Hinkle and Neil VanderWyst had one hit
each. In the nightcap, GHS' difficulties with the gloves
resulted in seven fielding errors. That problem helped put
the Streaks in a 5-1 hole, before a six-run outburst put
them in the lead for good. U.T. scored three more runs in
the sixth, but it was enough as GHS scored seven more runs
in their final two at bats. Herrin picked up the pitching
victory in relief of starter Zach Ricketts. VanderWyst
finished the contest. The Streaks had 17 hits in the
nightcap. Hunter, Ricketts and Kyle McGee had three apiece. Humes and Ellliott had two each and Herrin, Hinkle, Fields
and Jake Scott added one apiece. Next up for the Streaks
will be a non-conference test at Washington, Tuesday. |

Offense
finally 'clicks' for Streaks |
4/19 - (PEORIA) It was like throwing a
light switch. After going nine straight innings without a
getting a hit, GHS' varsity baseball team found their
batting groove to put up some big numbers in a 13-1
six-inning victory at Peoria Woodruff, Thursday. With the
win, the Streaks moved their season record to 7-2. They will
host United Township in a league doubleheader, Saturday,
starting at 11 a.m. WAIK (AM 1590) radio will broadcast the games live
from Sundberg Field. Junior Mark Mason pitched five
scoreless innings to pick up the victory. He allowed only
one hit, struck out three and walked six. Pat Messenger
tossed the sixth. Early on, neither team could get anything
done offensively. GHS did not get their first hit until the
fourth when Chad Humes singled. Humes was stranded at first,
but in the top of the fifth, the Streak offensive kicked
into gear. Chris Elliott hit a shot that the Woodruff
shortstop couldn't handle. After a sacrifice bunt, Jake
Scott singled and Kyle McGee walked to load the bases. Billy
Herrin drove home the Streaks' first run on a fielder's
choice. Robbie Hinkle then singled in two more runs and
Humes followed with a double that chase home another pair.
A.J. Fields made it back-to-back doubles, scoring Humes. GHS plated
seven in the fifth and then followed with six more in the
sixth to get more than the 10-run margin they needed to end
the contest early. In the sixth, T.J. Scott had two hits - a
double and single. Rogue Schott drove in two runs with a
two-out single. T.J. Scott and Humes had two hits each to
lead the Streaks. Hinkle drove in three and Fields, Schott,
Humes and T.J. Scott, two apiece. |
| 'Kong'
shot all Streaks needed |
4/17 - After pounding out 26 hits in a
doubleheader on Saturday, GHS managed just two against
Morton, Tuesday. Fortunately for the Streaks, those two hits
counted in a 2-0 non-conference win. Chris "Kong" Elliott
clubbed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to
give GHS a |
 |
lead they
would never relinquish. A.J. Fields
doubled with two out in the first and then trotted home when
Elliott hit his big fly. After the "Kong" blast, the Streaks
went down in order four of their remaining five at bats.
Three runners reached base, but two were picked off by
Morton's pitchers. The visiting Potters out-hit GHS 4-2, but
couldn't score. Rogue Schott pitched into the sixth inning
before leaving with two men on and nobody out. Billy Herrin
came on in relief and thanks to some defensive support in
the form of a double-play, was able to get the Streaks out
of a jam. Neil VanderWyst slammed the door shut on the
Potters in the seventh, striking out the side for the save.
|
|
Morton's Matt Bernear was three-for-three in the contest.
Drew Jacobson had the Potter's other hit. All hits were
singles. Tony DuBois took the pitching loss. He worked the
first three innings. Morton (3-8) then finished with a different
pitcher in each of the final three frames. Thursday, GHS'
varsity (now 6-2) will travel to Peoria Woodruff for another
non-conference contest, starting at 4:30 p.m. |

| GHS splits
in league opener |
4/14 - (MOLINE) GHS' varsity baseball team
finally opened their Western Big 6 campaign Saturday at
Alleman. The Streaks split a doubleheader with the Pioneers
11-5 and 5-6. With the split, GHS moved to 1-1 in league
play and 5-2, overall. It was the second split for Alleman,
which moved to 2-2 in league play.
Coach Arnie Gonzalez' Streaks hit the ball
well all day long, pounding out 26 hits. They had a 5-0
lead in the nightcap before Alleman rallied to salvage the
split. Tuesday, GHS will host Morton in a non-conference
contest. |

Streaks
rally to beat Limestone |
4/10 - For GHS' varsity baseball team,
Tuesday's victory over Limestone persistence paid off.
Despite some mistakes, the Streaks were able to overcome an
early deficit to top the Rockets 6-5. The GHS varsity, which
has seen more nearly twice as many rain-outs as games
played, moved their season record to 4-1. A promising start
that saw the Streaks grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
first went sour in the |
 |
top of the
second. GHS' Billy Herrin walked to open the first
frame and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Humes. Limestone had three consecutive
singles to load the bases in second off GHS starting pitcher
Zach Ricketts. A force-out at the plate left the bases
jammed before Limestone's Trent Thomson's single brought in
the visitors' first run. A sacrifice fly plated another run
and then a two-out single and error brought home the
Rockets' third and fourth run of the inning. Kyle McGee's
double to open the bottom of the third inning started a
Streak comeback. Herrin followed with an RBI single. Robbie
Hinkle kept the rally going with another single and Zach
Ricketts added a sacrifice fly to tie the score. A pair of
fielding errors helped Limestone regain |
|
the lead with a run in the
fourth. In the fifth, GHS again tied it up, loading the
bases and scoring on a walk issued to Chris Elliott. In
the sixth, the Streaks got what would prove to be the
game-winner. McGee singled to open the frame. Herrin
sacrificed him into scoring position and Hinkle sent him
home with an RBI double. That run was all the Streaks needed
as Kyle Hunter retired Limestone in order in the final two
at bats. Hunter picked up the win in relief with two
strikeouts. Herrin pitched the third through fifth innings,
allowing one unearned run. Hinkle led the GHS hitting
attack, going three-for-four. McGee was two-for-three.
Herrin, Hunter and Elliott also had hits for the winners.
Limestone finished with six hits in the contest. Next up for
the Streaks, if the weather allows, will be a road test at
Pekin Thursday. They will open Western Big 6 play Saturday
at Alleman. |

| Streaks top Metamora
at O'Brien Field |
| 4/6 - (PEORIA) Temperatures hovered around
the freezing mark in downtown Peoria late Friday afternoon
as GHS' varsity baseball team took on Metamora in a
non-conference battle. Despite |
the
conditions, the Streaks got solid pitching and a
four-run sixth inning to down the host Redbirds 5-1. With the non-conference victory, GHS'
varsity moved to 3-1 on the season. It was the first time
the Streaks had been able to play in a week of rain and
freeze-outs. Five pitchers saw action for the Streaks and
limited Metamora to only one run on two hits. Kyle Hunter,
the starter, got the win for GHS. He pitched two innings,
faced eight hitters, allowed one hit and struck out one.
Zach Ricketts pitched a scoreless third inning and Billy
Herrin did in the fourth and fifth frames. Rogue Schott was
tagged with the only Metamora run in the sixth. Two costly
fielding errors helped the |
 |
|
Redbirds plate their run.
GHS closer Neil VanderWyst slammed the door on Metamora in the
bottom of the seventh, striking out two in an impressive
non-save performance. Hunter drove in the Streaks' first run
in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly. Herrin scored
after reaching on a two-base error and advancing to third on
a wild pitch. |
|
|
 |
In the sixth, after watching GHS load the
bases,Metamora was able to get a force at the plate,
but that would be all the trouble they could dodge as
Robbie Hinkle, VanderWyst, Kyle McGee and Herrin would
each drive in runs. In
total, the Streaks had five hits in the contest. Chad
Humes had two hit and Herrin, Ricketts and VanderWyst,
one apiece. With
Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader at Rock Island
postponed due to cold weather, the next game for the
Streaks will be a make-up game Tuesday at home against
Limestone. |

| Streaks nail East
Peoria in five innings |
3/29 - Making up Wednesday's rain-out at
East Peoria in Galesburg set well with GHS' varsity baseball
team - so well they rolled to a 14-3 five-inning victory
over the visiting Raiders. The win, the Streaks moved their
early season record to 2-1, heading into this weekend's
Streaks Invite. East Peoria fell to 1-3. Kyle Hunter pitched
an efficient five innings for the victory. He four hits,
surrendered only two |
earned
runs and struck out 10 batters. Three of the four hits
came in the third when East Peoria scored all its
runs. With the pitching squared away nicely,
GHS' boys concentrated on the offense. Senior Zach Ricketts
was the leader, going three-for-four with four RBI's in the
contest. Chris Elliott got the Streaks' first homerun of the
season, a two-run shot in the GHS nine-run first. The big
early lead was too much for East Peoria to overcome. Hunter
got the Streaks on the scoreboard quickly, doubling in
lead-off man Kyle McGee. Chad Humes was hit by a pitch and
Ricketts doubled in another two runs. One out later, "Kong"
Elliott drove a flyball over the right-center fence to make
it 5-0. Four more runs would follow as the Streaks sent 14
men to the plate in the bottom of the first. GHS' boys sat
on their big lead for the next two innings, before getting
five in the fourth. In the fourth inning uprising, the
Streaks had five hits, including a double by Humes and
another RBI single by Ricketts. |
 |
|
GHS had 12 hits in the
contest. After Ricketts' three, Hunter and Elliott had two
apiece. McGee, Humes, Rogue Schott, Neil VanderWyst and
Derek White had one each. East Peoria starting pitcher Mitch
Kellum took the loss. He was also the Raiders' leading
hitter with two singles and two RBI's. Friday, the Streaks
will face Normal University High in the noon contest - the
first of seven tournament games that day. |

| GHS baseball team suffers
first loss |
3/23 - (CANTON) The weather cooperated, but
the Little Giants didn't, Thursday, as the GHS varsity
baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision at Canton. Saving their
veteran pitchers for Saturday's tournament at Springfield
Southeast, the Streaks fell too far behind to compete with
Canton. With the loss, the GHS boys fell to 1-1.
The Streaks are scheduled to play Decatur Eisenhower at
12:30 p.m. Saturday at Southeast. Depending on their result,
they will play either the winner or loser of the
Macomb-Southeast game in a contest later that afternoon. |

Streaks
shut out Auburn in opener |
3/17 - Junior Kyle Hunter set the tone and
GHS' varsity baseball team got the job done, posting an 8-0
victory over Rockford Auburn in Saturday's season opener.
Hunter picked up the win, allowing no hits and striking out
six. Zach Ricketts and Neil |
 |
VanderWyst each threw two
innings of relief and combined for the shutout. It took a
while for the Streaks to get to Auburn starter Bo Tillman,
but in the bottom of the third, they pushed across what
turned out to be the only run they would need. Rogue Schott
doubled to open the frame and scored when Kyle McGee hit
into a double play. GHS added two more runs in the fourth.
Chris Elliott doubled home Robbie Hinkle, who had reached on
an error. VanderWyst then laid down a bunt single to advance
Elliott to third. He scored on a sacrifice bunt by Schott.
In the fifth, the Streaks put the game away with a five-run
outburst. Three walks, two hits and hit batsman fueled the
rally. A key blow was Hinkle's two-out, two-run single. GHS
out-hit Auburn 8-1. Elliott and VanderWyst |
|
had two hits
apiece. McGee, Hunter, Hinkle and Schott added the other
baseraps. Wayne Hendryx collected the Knights' only hit. He
singled to the left field line in the fifth, but was gunned
down trying to stretch the hit into a double. In the other
"get together" games, LaSalle-Peru took a double dip,
beating Pekin 5-2 and Auburn 11-3. Thursday, the
Streaks will travel to Canton for a non-conference game,
weather-permitting. |

| Weather
alters opening weekend schedule |
3/15 - The warm weather early in the week
disappeared Thursday and forced this week's opening weekend
schedule to change. Rain and cold temperatures rendered the
sophomore field unplayable, but an effort will be made to
get the varsity field ready for a 5 p.m. varsity game,
Friday night. GHS' varsity baseball team will face
LaSalle-Peru Friday and will take on Rockford Auburn in
Saturday's 3 p.m. game. L-P will play Pekin at 11 a.m.
Saturday as originally scheduled. Pekin will then take on
Auburn at 1 p.m. If the sophomore field had been available
there would have been two games at 1 p.m. and the additional
game with L-P would have been a "go". |

Streaks
will play in Busch Stadium |
GHS' varsity baseball
team will get a chance to play in a major league
stadium this spring. On Sunday, May 6th, the Streaks
will take on O'Fallon High School at the new Busch
Stadium in St. Louis. The game will follow the major
contest between the defending World Champion Cardinals
and division rival Houston Astros. The major league
game will start at 1:10 p.m. and the high school game
will follow approximately 30 minutes after. GHS'
baseball team has played in St. Louis before, but this
will be the first time in the new stadium. Ticket
orders are now being taken and |
 |
|
it appears a local radio
station may sponsor a charter bus package for fans wishing
to attend. There are two options for tickets
($27 and $20) and the seats are located along the left field
line. The school's total allotment is 1,100 tickets. Those
tickets will be sold on a "first come, first serve" basis and
when they sold out it is unlikely the school will be
able to get more. For more information, click on the
Cardinals logo. |
