Mike Hoosen is selected M.V.P.

6/5 - Senior third baseman Mike Hoosen has been selected by his teammates as the 2006 Bednar Award winner.
The award is given annually to the Most Valuable Player for the GHS varsity baseball team. The Award is named in honor of Chuck Bednar, who coached the Silver Streaks in the 1940's and 50's. The long-time coach helped establish the rich baseball tradition at the school and took a couple of teams to the State finals.
Hoosen's brother Steve also won the award in 2003. It is considered one the most prestigious athletic awards.

IHSA Sectional
Streaks' post-season run ends
6/3 - (MOLINE) The "magic" finally ran out on GHS' varsity baseball team, Saturday, as they fell 9-1 to top-seeded Limestone in the IHSA Sectional Final at Augustana College.
After winning eight consecutive games to end the regular season, capture the Regional
championship, post 20 win and advance to the Sectional Final, the Streaks were unable to get past a solid Limestone squad, hungry to earn their second State Finals appearance in a row. GHS' boys finished 20-14, still quite an accomplishment considering coach Arnie Gonzalez' crew was just 12-13 on May 19th.
Robbie Hinkle, who had pitched the Streaks to a Regional title last Saturday, was touched for six runs, but only two of Limestone's runs were earned as GHS committed four fielding errors. Hinkle three and a third innings and was tagged with the loss. Ryan Painter, Zach Ricketts and Neil VanderWyst all saw action in relief. VanderWyst finished the contest and was the only pitcher to hold Limestone scoreless. By doing so, the junior righthander assured the Streaks on their final at bats as Limestone was denied a run-rule finish.
After a scoreless first inning, the Rockets were the first to score in the bottom of the second. With one out, Matt Bazhenow singled. Josh Haun followed with a run-scoring double to put
Limestone on the scoreboard. An fielding error then put the next batter on base and set the table for Shawn Songer's two-run double.
GHS looked like they wanted to make a game of it in their next at bat in the top of the third. Cory Myler singled with one out and then scored one out later on a double by Tyler Leihenseder. Unfortunately, one run was all the Streaks could get as A.J. Fields was retired on a deep fly-out to right to end the inning.
Down 3-1, GHS needed to hold Limestone, but they couldn't as the Rockets took advantage of a walk, a hit-by-pitch and an error to push their lead back to three runs.
The fourth inning was, in many respects, reflected the storyline of the game. The Streaks got
the first two batters on base to start top the of inning, but a force-out, strikeout and harmless pop-up ended the threat. Then in the bottom of the inning, Limestone put the contest away with a five-run uprising. A lead-off walk essentially traded places with the next batter on a force-out. Then came an error and a wild pitch. Painter came into relieve with two runners on. He walked two straight batters to force in Limestone's fifth run. Ricketts then followed on the mound and was greeted with back-to-back doubles by Jesse Burns and Drew Koeppel. The Rockets were
finally retired, but the damage was done as they pushed their lead to 9-1 with three innings left.
Once again, in the fifth, the Streaks managed to get their first two batters on base only to be denied. In the sixth, Mike Hoosen was hit by a pitch to open the inning, but Limestone turned a double-play to kill that threat. GHS went down in order in the seventh.
Limestone out-hit the Streaks 7-4 in the contest. Songer had two doubles to pace the winners. For GHS, Leihenseder had a double and Billy Herrin, Myler and Hoosen all chipped in singles.
Saturday's game was the final one for nine GHS seniors. In a class move, Coach Gonzalez made sure all the seniors got into the game.
IHSA Sectional
Streaks beat Richwoods 6-1
6/1 - (MOLINE) The 20th victory of the season was a special one for GHS' varsity baseball team, Thursday, as they defeated Peoria Richwoods 6-1 in the Sectional semi-final at Augustana College.
With the win, the Streaks (20-13) advanced to Saturday's Sectional championship game to take on top-seeded Limestone. Coach Arnie Gonzalez' crew, now one of only 32 teams left in Class AA, got their bats going in the fourth and fifth innings to get past an underdog Richwoods team that captured the Canton Regional.
Kyle Hunter pitched six innings to earn the victory for the Streaks. He was greeted rudely by the
Knights, who managed nine hits in the first five innings. However, the lefty and his teammates were up to the task as they only surrendered one run. Neil VanderWyst was called upon once again to "close" and the fire-balling righthander retired Richwoods three-up-and-three-down in the seventh.
After a scoreless first inning, Richwoods got the initial run in the contest in the top of the second. With one out, Jim Wennmacher doubled and scored one out later on a single by Eric Hilton. The Knights got another hit in the frame, but Hunter ended the uprising with a strikeout. In the third inning, the
Knights threatened to add to their lead, but a double play averted disaster for the Streaks. Robbie Hinkle sprinted from his second base position to the rightfield line to catch a pop-up. Richwoods' runner on second tagged up and headed for third, but a strong throw from Hinkle to Mike Hoosen
covering third cut down the runner and essentially ended the threat. Richwoods went on to get back-to-back hits in the next inning, but again were unable to push another run across.
Trailing 1-0, GHS used a lead-off walk in the fourth inning to get on the scoreboard. Chad Humes drew the base-on-balls and was followed by a double by Hoosen. With two men in scoring position, Corey Clay responded with another double to plate both Humes and Hoosen with the tying and go-ahead runs. The Streaks went on to load the bases, but Richwoods managed to escape with minimal
damage, at least until the fifth.
Things fell in place nicely for GHS in the fifth. Billy Herrin led-off the frame by reaching base on a dropped third strike. Tyler Leihensder then reached on an error, setting the table for A.J. Fields, whose shot to centerfield came just few feet from clearing fence. His double chased home
Herrin. Humes then walked to load the bases. Hoosen hit a sacrifice fly to deep leftfield, scoring Leihenseder with GHS' fourth run. Clay then followed and promptly reprised his efforts from the inning before, knocking in two runs with a double.
Facing a five-run deficit proved too much for Richwoods to overcome. An error got the Knights a baserunner in the sixth, but they had used up all their hits. Hunter got them out on a force-out, flyball and strikeout. Three groundouts in the seventh ended the season for the Knights.
Richwoods out-hit GHS 9-6. Starting pitcher Pat Hogan and Dan Corey had two hits apiece for the Knights. For the Streaks, Clay was the only man with multiple hits. Hoosen had his double and Herrin, Fields and Nichols, one single each.
Saturday's championship game with start at 1:00 p.m. at the Augustana field, located just off John Deere road. A good-sized crowd is expected. The winner will advance to the "sweet sixteen" and Monday's Super-sectional at the University of Illinois.
IHSA Regional Final
Streaks rally past Moline 9-4
5/27 - GHS' varsity baseball team refused to lose, Saturday. Down 4-3, heading into their final at bats against top-seeded Moline, the Streaks extended their 2006 season with a timely six-run rally.
That exciting 9-4 win gave coach Arnie Gonzalez' boys the Regional championship on their home field in front of a good-sized afternoon crowd. The victory also improved the Streaks' season
record to 19-13, but more importantly, earned them a spot in next week's Sectional Tournament hosted by Augustana College. GHS will take on Peoria Richwoods, the winner of the Canton Regional in a 6 p.m. game Thursday, June 1st.
Robbie Hinkle drew the tough mound assignment for the Streaks and the junior righthander responded with a strong performance. He shut-out the pop-up prone Maroons through four innings before surrendering a solo run in the fifth and three in the sixth. Neil VanderWyst, the Streaks' closer, stopped the "bleeding" in the sixth and then tossed a scoreless seventh to pick-up the victory. Hinkle struck out two and scattered 10 hits, with five of them coming in the sixth. VanderWyst allowed no hits and struck out two of the five men he faced.
Homeruns were a big part of GHS' success. A.J. Fields and Chad Humes broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with back-to-back jacks. Fields reprised his round-trip performance two innings later. That solo shot answered Moline's first run scored in the bottom of the fifth.
Moline stopped popping up in the sixth as it appeared
Hinkle began to tire on the mound. Tony Stevens smacked a double to lead-off the frame for the Maroons. James Hoyt singled and Joe Thompson doubled to score Stevens and Hoyt and tie things up 3-3. A RBI single by Greg Pepping put the Maroons on top by a run. John Grunewald followed with another hit that chased Hinkle. VanderWyst struck out the next batter and then got a ground out to end the Moline uprising.
In the seventh inning, the Streaks, who were visitors on the scoreboard, needed a rally and they
got it. Mike Nichols doubled to lead-off the inning and Ben Ascher then went deep for a two-shot that put GHS back on top. Billy Herrin then singled and Tyler Leihenseder sacrificed him to second. At that point, Moline pulled starting pitcher Kirk Clark, who had struck out seven men through six and a third innings. A throwing error put Herrin on third and the Maroons elected to intentionally walk Fields. Another throwing error plated Herrin and then Humes singled. One out later, Corey Clay doubled in two runs. Kyle Hunter then touched Moline's third pitcher, Michael Mack for another single that brought home Clay and gave GHS a
five-run cushion heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Streaks only out-hit the Maroons 12-10, but claimed a 4-0 margin in homeruns hit. Fields was 3-for-3 at the plate and Humes' 3-for-4. Nichols chipped in two hits and Herrin, Clay, Hunter and Ascher had one apiece. Matt Bruhn, Thompson and Grunewald had two hits each to lead the Maroons.
GHS' vcitory evened their season series with Moline at 2-2. The Maroons, who tied for second in the Western Big 6, finished 22-13.
IHSA Regional
Streaks get past Panthers 4-1
5/25 - Rain might delayed the start of Thursday's IHSA Regional game between United Township and GHS' varsity baseball team, but the delay didn't keep the Streaks from getting started offensively as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 4-1 victory.
With the win, coach Arnie Gonzalez' crew (18-13 on the season) earned a place in Saturday's 1:00 p.m. Regional final against top-seeded Moline.
Four runs in the first inning proved more than enough for the Streaks as sophomore pitcher Kyle Hunter mowed down the opposition. U.T. only managed one run on a passed ball in the fifth inning as GHS played errorless baseball and got 10 strikeouts from Hunter. The lefty only allowed four hits in six innings of work. The Panthers had no more than one in an inning, which made it particularly difficult to put anything together offensively. Neil VanderWyst pitched the final inning for the save.
After a walk and three strikeouts for the Panthers in the top of the first, GHS' boys came out aggressively. Billy Herrin slapped a single to center. Tyler Leihenseder drew a walk and A.J. Fields was hit by a pitch. Chad Humes then drove a sacrifice to center to plate Herrin. Mike Hoosen hit ground ball, but as the Panthers went for the double-play, the throw
went wild and both Leihenseder and courtesy runner Ben Ascher scored.  Hoosen took second on the error and one out later scored on a double by Mike Nichols.
The four-run first inning was all GHS would get against U.T. pitcher Ryan Wallace, but it proved
to be more than enough. The Streaks got five more hits and had some opportunities to score, but U.T. turned in some fine defensive plays, including a diving catch by centerfielder Chad Harris that turned into double-play and ended GHS' threat in the fifth. In the very next frame, Robbie Hinkle made turnabout fair play as he dove to snare a line-drive from the bat of Kevin Marner to end the Panthers' threat in the sixth.
U.T. had runners on base in every inning, but only managed the one run when courtesy runner Tony Sacco raced across the plate on a passed ball in the fifth. The Panthers left eight men on  base in the contest.
The Streaks out-hit U.T. 7-4, with Leihenseder going two-for-two with a double. Nichols also had a double and Herrin, Fields, Hoosen and Hinkle added one hit apiece. Justin McIntosh had a double for U.T.
Streaks edge LaSalle-Peru 6-5 in Regional tune-up
5/22 - (PERU) Both teams wanted some good competition before their respective Regional openers this week and that's what GHS and LaSalle-Peru's varsity baseball teams got, Monday. The Streaks rallied in the seventh for a 6-5 victory.
With the win, GHS' varsity will enter the post-season on the heels of a five-game winning streak.
L-P struck first in the contest with a homerun from freshman Karch Kowalczyk. The Cavaliers added another run in the third to up their advantage to 2-0. In the fourth inning, the Streaks wiped out L-P's lead with a four-run uprising. Corey Clay smacked a double to opening the frame and promptly scored on Chad Humes' RBI double. Copycat Mike Hoosen then doubled to drive on Humes. Two outs later, Robbie Hinkle connected for a "no doubt" two-run homer to put GHS in front 4-2.
The Cavaliers put together a couple hits and took advantage of the pair of Streak errors to regain the lead with a three-run sixth. With their backs to wall, GHS rallied in the seventh. Billy Herrin singled to lead-off the inning and stole second. Kyle McGee walked and a balk advanced both runners. Clay lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score Herrin with the tying run. Nolan Crain then drove in what proved to be the game-winner as he scored McGee on a suicide squeeze bunt.
Herrin picked up the pitching victory in relief of GHS starter Kyle Krisher. Neil VanderWyst sealed the victory with three-up-three-down save.
The Streaks out-hit the Cavaliers 8-7 in the contest. Zach Ricketts had two hits to pace the winners. Herrin, Clay, Humes, Hoosen, Hinkle and Preston Anderson added chipped in one hit apiece. Cam Puetz had to two doubles to lead L-P at the plate.
Thursday, the Streaks will host United Township in the Regional semi-final at 4:30 p.m. Geneseo will take on Moline in the other semi on Wednesday.
Streaks Classic '06
Bats come alive as Streaks go 4-0 in Classic
5/20 - Consistency has not been a characteristic of the GHS varsity baseball team's offensive attack this spring, but this weekend the Streaks broke out the big bats, scoring 10+ runs in three of their four games in the Streaks Classic.
Perhaps the offensive outburst is coming at the right time as GHS will host an IHSA Regional
this week. Saturday, the Streaks defeated Peoria Woodruff 11-7 in a slugfest and then smacked a good Metamora crew 14-1. With the victories, GHS' boys assured themselves of a winning season. They stand 16-13, with one regular season game remaining, Monday at LaSalle-Peru.
Woodruff saved their best pitcher for the Streaks, but the home team was undaunted, scoring in the first four innings, including a big five-run third. GHS jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Billy Herrin led-off with a single and scored on later on a wild pitch. Chad Humes doubled with two outs and scored on Mike Hoosen's RBI single.
The Streaks added another run in the second inning before Woodruff cut the margin to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, however, GHS took control. The first six Streak batters reached base. Hoosen drove in one run and Corey Clay delivered a base-clearing two-run triple. Kyle Hunter followed with a single to plate Clay. GHS added two more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth on a homerun by Humes. They never relinquished the lead. Woodruff scored solo runs in the fourth and sixth and three in their final at bat.
Luke Kidd hit a "no doubt" homerun for the Warriors to lead-off the fourth.
The Streaks out-hit the offensive-minded Woodruff 13-12. Hoosen had three hits and three RBI's to lead the winners. Hunter, Clay, Humes and Herrin had two hits each. Robbie Hinkle, A.J. Fields and Cory Myler added one hit apiece.
Nolan Crain picked up the pitching victory for the Streaks. He went the distance, allowing 12 hits and striking out five.
In the final game of the Classic, the results were far from "classic" (except for the Streaks' fans) as GHS dispensed with Metamora in five innings. The Redbirds scored one run in the first inning off Streak starter Zach Ricketts. After that, the GHS righthander took command, limiting Metamora to three hits.
The Streaks got their offense going early, scoring two runs in the first and five in the second. They added two more in the third and five in the fourth.
Fields had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBI's. Clay also chipped in three hits, with one double, and three RBI's. Kyle Krisher had two hits, including a double; Mike Nichols, a triple; Herrin, a double; Humes and Hoosen one hit each.
Victories for GHS varsity in Streaks Classic
5/19 - It took a while for GHS' varsity baseball team to get things going Friday night, but they did, the results were good. The Streaks opened the evening session of the 2006 Streaks Classic with a 7-6 victory over Springfield Southeast and then won the late game 11-1 over Sterling in six innings.
In the Southeast game, fell behind 5-1, before rallying for six runs in the final two innings.
Robbie Hinkle went six innings on the mound for the Streaks, allowing eight hits and striking out five. It was the righthander's longest outing of the season to date. After walking the first batter in the seventh, Hinkle gave way to Neil VaderWyst, who allow one run to score, but still earned the save.
GHS had only five hits in the contest, but took advantage some Springfield errors to post a five-run sixth. Mike Hoosen had a double and Kyle Hunter, two hits, to lead the Streaks at the plate.
Billy Herrin and Mike Nichols both added singles.
Hunter took the mound in the nightcap for GHS and allowed one unearned run in four innings on just one hit. The sophomore lefty was in control, striking out seven. Ryan Painter struck out two more batters in two innings of relief.
The Streaks grabbed the lead with a solo run in the second and then added three-spots in both the third and fourth frames. They added four more runs in the sixth to end the game early.
GHS out-hit Sterling 10-2. Hoosen, Hinkle and A.J. Fields had two hits apiece. Herrin, Tyler Leihenseder, Chad Humes and Nichols added one hit each. Hoosen had two RBI's.
The two wins, Friday, lifted GHS' season record back above the .500 mark to 14-13.
Saturday, the Streaks will play two more games, taking on Peoria Woodruff at 2:30 p.m. and Metamora at 4:15 p.m. Both games will be played at Sundberg Field. There will be six other games played at Sundberg, the East Field and Carl Sandburg College.
Senior Day struggle
Streaks fall to Peoria Richwoods 6-3
5/18 - The famous adage "dress for success" might actually have worked in reverse for GHS' varsity baseball team, here Thursday, as they lost to Peoria Richwoods 6-3.
For Senior Day, the Streaks elected to wear their "casual" white jerseys, usually reserved for JV
games, against Richwoods. GHS' boys played like jayvees, giving up 10 hits and committing seven fielding errors.
The non-conference loss to Richwoods dropped the Streaks below .500 again (12-13), heading into this weekend's Streaks Classic.
From the start, it was a struggle for GHS' boys. Richwoods got to starting pitcher Kyle Krisher for two quick runs in the first inning on three hits and a walk. The errors started to take affect in the Knight second. Three consecutive hits and an errant pick-off throw pushed two more runs across for the visitors.
Down 4-0, the Streaks cut the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second. Mike Hoosen opened the frame with a double and scored on
Ben Ascher's RBI single. Ascher eventually scored on a two-out error.
A homerun by Richwoods' Dan Corey off GHS relief pitch Nolan to lead-off the third gave the Knights a 5-2 lead. From that point on, the Streaks committed six fielding errors, but only gave up one more run - a solo tally in the top of the seventh.
GHS could not catch Richwoods as they managed only one more run. They stranded five runners in the final three innings, but only plated Krisher in the fifth.
Richwoods out-hit the Streaks 10-6. Corey Clay, Hoosen, Ascher, Krisher, Robbie Hinkle and Billy Herrin had one hit apiece.
In addition to the Senior Day ceremony before the game, honoring both the seniors and their parents, it was Community Night with a number of give-aways, games and free pizza courtesy of Domino's. The event was organized by Kat Mason.
Friday, GHS' varsity will no doubt be in their sharp-looking home uniforms as they play the two evening games on the opening day of the Streaks Classic. They face Springfield Southeast at 6 p.m. and Sterling at 8 p.m.
Rock Island tops Streaks third straight time
5/11 - (ROCK ISLAND) The strong winds Thursday afternoon did not blow fortune the way of the GHS varsity baseball team. Instead, it seemed to favor the host team as Rock Island took a non-conference contest 5-1.
Lefthander Billy Herrin took the loss for the Streaks on the mound and as has been the custom in many of GHS losses this season, opportunities to score went by the wayside.
With the loss, the Streaks saw their season fall back to the .500 mark at 12-12.
This weekend, weather-permitting, GHS' varsity will compete in the Pontiac Invitational. They are slated to play Dwight on Friday night and then play two more games Saturday.
Streaks sweep Quincy to finish 5-5 in WB6
5/6 - GHS' varsity baseball team has been hovering around the .500 mark all season. Saturday, the Streaks made their conference record just that, defeating Quincy twice at Sundberg Field.
GHS won 2-1 and 10-5 to even their Western Big 6 mark at 5-5 and increase their overall mark to 12-11.
Kyle Hunter was masterful on the mound, striking out 13 in the opener, to pick-up his second league victory. The sophomore lefty, who drew the game one assignment in each conference doubleheader finished the league season 2-2. He pitched deep into the Moline game, but got no decision.
In the opener, GHS scored both their runs in the bottom of the third. The Streaks' Tyler Leihenseder was hit by a pitch and Robbie Hinkle drew a walk. Cory Myler sacrificed the runners to second and third and an error on Billy Herrin's grounder brought in both runs. The Streaks had only one hit in the opener against Quincy's Mitchell Fairley.
In the nightcap, the GHS offensive machine got back in action. Mike Nichols drove in three runs and A.J. Fields had three hits. Hinkle, who pitched four innings, picked up the victory. He allowed five hits and two runs.
The Streaks will try to push their season record further above .500 when they travel to Rock Island Thursday for a non-conference game. They will also participate in the Pontiac Tournament next weekend.
Streaks suffer frustrating loss to United Township
5/4 - Another one got away, Thursday, as GHS' varsity baseball team dropped an 8-4 non-conference decision to United Township.
Trailing only 3-1, heading into the seventh inning, the Streaks surrendered five unearned runs to push the deficit to 8-1. Then in the bottom of the frame, GHS finally put together some offense. They scored three runs and had one hard hit grounder heading up the middle not been slowed by hitting pitching rubber, they might have made things much more interesting.
Billy Herrin led the Streaks with three hits, including a triple. Mike Nichols had two doubles, but GHS struggled with runners in scoring position. The Streaks stranded runners on third base in the second inning, second in the third and on second in the fourth and fifth innings.
With the loss, the Streaks fell below .500 at 10-11 on the season. Saturday, GHS will close-out the Western Big 6 campaign at home against Quincy.
Streaks split doubleheader with United Township
5/2 - (EAST MOLINE) GHS' varsity baseball team wanted a sweep, but had to settle for a split, Tuesday, as they made up their Western Big 6 doubleheader at United Township. The Streaks won the first game 2-0 behind the two-hit shutout pitching of Kyle Hunter, but dropped the nightcap 7-5.
The GHS victory in the opener threw the Western Big 6 title race into a tie with only Saturday's doubleheaders remaining. With their third loss, U.T. joins Moline and Rock Island at 5-3 in league play. The Streaks needed a sweep to get in the thick of things, but with the split, the stand 3-5 heading into Saturday's doubleheader with Quincy.
Chad Humes drove in one of GHS' runs in the opener. The Streaks scored solo tallies in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the nightcap, U.T. jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings. The Streaks scored three runs in the top the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but then allowed the Panthers to push three runs across in the bottom of the frame. Those U.T. runs were decisive as GHS could only manage a pair of runs their final at bat. Nolan Crain took the pitching loss for the Streaks. Neil VanderWyst shut down the Panthers in the final two innings, but his teammates couldn't come up with the runs needed to pull off the comeback.
A.J. Fields hit two homeruns to lead the Streaks at the plate. Fields drove in four runs in the contest and Robbie Hinkle, one. GHS and U.T. both had eight hits in the nightcap.
Thursday, the Streaks will host U.T. in a non-conference game that will decide the season series.
GHS reserves drop 6-5 decision to Abingdon
4/27 - A homerun in the top of the seventh inning broke a deadlock and sent Abingdon to a 6-5 victory over GHS' varsity reserves, Thursday at Sundberg Field.
GHS had taken the lead with a three-run lead with a four-run third inning, but couldn't hang on as the Commandoes tied the score in the sixth and took the lead in the seventh.
The loss was the first of the season for the GHS reserves as they fell to 2-1 against local Class A teams.
Moline's big inning too much for Streaks
4/26 - Ouch! A 10-run second inning for Moline proved to be the downfall for GHS' varsity baseball team, here Wednesday, in a 12-7 non-conference loss.
The visiting Maroons sent 13 men the plate and hit three homeruns in the big uprising that took them from a 4-0 deficit to a lead they would never relinquish. The Streaks held their own the rest of the way, but couldn't plate enough runs to mount a comeback.
With the loss, GHS' varsity saw their season record evened at 9-9. They will try again to move
above the .500 mark Saturday when they travel to East Moline for a Western Big 6 doubleheader against United Township.
In Wednesday's game things started out nicely for the Streaks, before turning sour. GHS had four straight hits in their side of the first inning and took advantage of a couple big Moline fielding errors to score four runs.
An error on a routine ground ball began what would be a disastrous top of the second inning for the Streaks. Moline took advantage with a double and follow-up homerun by James Hoyt. In a matter of minutes, GHS' lead had evaporated to 4-3. Another error  and a single set the stage for the next Maroon homer. This time, Matt Bruhn drove one over the fence for three more runs and a 6-4 Moline lead. A walk and two doubles later, Hoyt returned to the plate and promptly smacked his second homer of the inning.

Still reeling from the shock of the big inning, the Streaks recovered enough to score a pair of runs in the bottom of second. Back-to-back hits by Chad Humes and A.J. Fields cut the deficit to 10-6. Unfortunately for the Streaks only one more run would cross the plate, while Moline would add solo tallies in the third and sixth frames. Tyler Leihenseder's sacrifice fly scored Corey Clay in the bottom of the sixth.
Four pitchers saw duty on the mound for GHS. starter Zach Ricketts was tagged with the loss. He allowed seven runs (only two earned) on five hits in one and a third innings. Ryan Painter pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up five more runs on five hits. Leihenseder  pitched the sixth and Robbie Hinkle, the seventh.
Moline out-hit the Streaks 11-9. Seven of the Maroons' hits were for extra bases. Billy Herrin, Humes, Fields and Ben Ascher had two hits each for GHS. Clay added a single.
Western Big 6
Streaks salvage split with Alleman
4/22 - A three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh allowed GHS' varsity baseball team to escape with a doubleheader split, here Saturday, against Western Big 6 foe Alleman.
The 8-7 win in the nightcap rescued the Streaks from what had been a frustrating day. Despite a strong pitching performance in the opener, the GHS boys dropped the opener 4-2 and had it not been for the late rally, they were looking at falling completely out of the conference race. With
the split, the Streaks moved to 2-4 in league play and 9-8, overall. Alleman also moved to 2-4 in conference and stand 12-5, overall.
In the first game of the day, Kyle Hunter tossed a three-hit complete game for GHS, but came up on the losing end of a 4-2 score. The sophomore lefthander struck out 11 men and walked none, but fell victim to the long ball as two the Pioneers' hits were homeruns, including three-run shot by Caleb Rangel that proved to be decisive.
Alleman scored first in the second inning of the opener on a homerun by Tanner Holgate. The Streaks matched that score with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame as Kyle Krisher reached on a error and eventually scored on Corey Clay's ground ball. In the third, back-to-back fielding errors set the table
and Rangel took advantage to give the Pioneers a 4-1 lead with one swing of the bat. From that point until the bottom of the sixth Alleman's three-run lead stood.
In the sixth, GHS took advantage of three Pioneer fielding errors to add another run. Unfortunately for the Streaks, a two-run deficit would be as close as they would get.
Andy Doyle picked up the pitching victory for Alleman despite having to deal with his teammates' five fielding errors. He scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked two. Both runs surrendered were unearned.
Ben Ascher, Mike Hoosen, A.J. Fields, Chad Humes and Tyler Leihenseder all had hits in the first game. Humes' baserap was a double.
The nightcap started out promisingly for the Streaks as they scored first, but then things turned sour before they mounted a comeback that would come down to the final out.
A double by Mike Hoosen turned into GHS' first run in the bottom of the second inning. He scored on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a balk. In the top of the third, the Pioneers got
on the scoreboard with a pair of runs. Andy Rhodes doubled in both runs after Doyle and Rangle each singled.
Alleman really found their groove at plate in the top of the fourth with two triples and a double. They scored five runs to take a 7-2 lead. After the falling behind in the fourth, Streak coach Arnie Gonzalez reminded his team there was plenty of time left to catch the Pioneers. His encouragement proved prophetic.
The Streaks responded in their side of the fourth with three runs to cut the deficit to 7-4. Fields walked with one out and scored on Hoosen's double. Corey Clay followed with another double, driving in Hoosen A single by Hunter plated Clay. GHS got another run in the fifth as Humes singled with two outs and scored on Fields' double. The Streaks got a couple of runners on in the sixth, but could not score, leaving the score 7-5 heading into their final at bat. While relief pitchers Krisher and Robbie Hinkle held Alleman in check, the locals made their final at bat count.
Leihenseder singled to open the bottom of the seventh. One out later, Fields singled. Hoosen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Hunter drew a walk to force home Leihenseder. Mike Nichols smacked a pop fly to left field that nobody catch. Both Fields and Hoosen raced home to give GHS the victory.
Hinkle picked up the pitching victory. Nolan Crain started the game, but was chased in fourth. Krisher took the game into the sixth, before Hinkle came on the get the final five outs. Hoosen, Fields and Humes had two hits each to lead the 10-hit GHS attack. Leihenseder, Hunter, Clay and Nichols had one apiece.
Tuesday, the varsity Streaks will host Washington and Wednesday they will entertain Moline. Both will be non-conference games.
Streaks rock Peoria Woodruff 14-7
4/20 - GHS' varsity baseball team achieved many of the things they hoped to accomplish Thursday against Peoria Woodruff, beginning with a 14-7 non-conference victory.
The Streaks pushed their season record above the .500 mark (8-7), hit the ball hard and got everyone some playing time. It wasn't a "perfect" performance as coach Arnie Gonzalez' crew committed three errors and struggled on the mound at times, but overall, GHS' boys put together
their second win in a row and may have some momentum heading into Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader with Alleman.
Zach Ricketts picked up the pitching victory, despite a rocky five-run Woodruff uprising in the third inning. He allowed solo runs in the fourth and fifth before receiving relief help from Kyle Krisher, who held Woodruff in check for one and a third innings. Robbie Hinkle, who made his first appearance of the season, came on to pitch a three-up-three-down seventh.
GHS took charge of the contest early with an
eight-run second inning. The Streaks had nine hits in the frame, including a triple by Corey Clay and doubles by Mike Nichols, Tyler Leihenseder and Chris Elliott.
Woodruff could not catch GHS, but made things interesting with five runs in the top of the third. The big blow for the Warriors was a two-run homer by Zack Gutierrez. The Streaks plated a solo run in the bottom of the third to make the score 9-5.
Woodruff inched closer with solo runs in the fourth and fifth, before GHS knocked in four runs in their side of the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Clay led the Streaks with three hits. Chad Humes and Mike Nichols had two each. A.J. Fields, Elliott, Mike Hoosen, Leihenseder and Kyle Hunter had one hit apiece.
Streaks survive to clip Morton 10-8
4/18 - (MORTON) It did not come easy, but GHS' varsity baseball team got the final out with the potential tying runs in scoring position for Morton in their final at bat to preserve a 10-8 non-conference road victory.
Chad Humes powered the 12-hit Streak attack with a  three-run homer. GHS scored five runs in the fourth inning to take command.
The Streaks, who showed some sloppy glovework at times, simply out-scored the Potters to bring their season record to 7-7. Morton fell to 4-10 on the season.
Wild win for Streak reserves at United
4/17 - (ALEXIS) It was one of those games where anything could happen. GHS' varsity reserves took a five-run lead into the bottom of the seventh at United, Monday, and escaped with a 13-12 victory.
The Streaks broke an 8-8 deadlock through six innings in a game that saw both teams hit for double figures and boot the ball around in the field. Chris "Kong" Elliott crushed two home runs and drove in six runs to lead the Streaks. GHS had 15 hits in the contest.
GHS' reserves will join the rest of the varsity crew, Tuesday, when they travel to Morton for an important non-conference contest with Sectional seeding implications.
'Rocky' day for Streaks in Western Big 6
4/15 - As far as the weather was concerned, Saturday, it was far and away the best day of the season. Unfortunately for the members of the GHS varsity baseball team, Saturday was a day they would prefer to forget.
Rock Island swept a Western Big 6 doubleheader from the Streaks at Sundberg Field 4-2, 14-6.
With the double-hit, GHS' conference record slipped to 1-3. They are 6-7, overall. Rock Island, which split last weekend with Alleman, moved to 3-1.
Perhaps the most painful loss for the Streaks came in the opener when they wasted a strong pitching performance by Kyle Hunter and literally "gave" the contest away via fielding errors. Rock Island scored solo runs in the first and second innings and held the lead until the Streaks tied it up in the fifth.
A walk and error helped the Rocks break through in the top of the first. Drew Davis cracked a first-pitch homer over the left field fence to lead off the second inning. Hunter then shut the visitors down until the final frame.
GHS hit the ball, but were not able to get to Rocky starting pitcher Kyle Simpkins until the fourth inning. With one out, Chad Humes doubled. He scored one out later on an RBI single by Kyle Krisher. In the fifth, Ben Ascher singled with

one out, stole second and scored on Billy Herrin's single. GHS missed a opportunity to take the lead in the sixth as Humes led-off the frame with another double. He advanced to third, but was stranded there. Mike Nichols also reached that inning on a walk and stole second to leave two men in scoring position when the threat ended on a strikeout.
Rock Island's Josh Gibb opened the top of the seventh with a single. On Tyler Allison's ensuing sacrifice bunt, an errant throw put runners on second and third. An intentional walk loaded the
bases and the Rocks' Kyle Anderson drove a sacrifice fly to deep center to give his team the go-ahead run. Another sacrifice by Davis gave the Rocks a two-run lead they would not relinquish.
Hunter took the loss, despite allowing only four hits. He walked six. GHS finished with six hits, with Humes leading the way with his two doubles. Herrin, Krisher, Corey Clay and Ascher had the other hits.
Rock Island took a 4-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap and never looked back.
They added two more in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth, before putting the contest away with five in the sixth. The Streaks plated a solo run in the second and a pair in both the fourth and fifth innings. They added one more in the bottom of the seventh.
Only two of Rocky's four runs in the second inning were earned. GHS committed just three errors in the contest, but each came at a critical moment. Humes had another strong offensive performance in the nightcap for the Streaks. He reached base every time, scored four runs and went two-for-two, walk two walks. Mike Hoosen also had two hits and scored two runs. Nichols had two and an RBI. Cory Myler had a double and Krisher and Ascher, one hit apiece. Rock Island finished with 14 hits and committed no errors.
Nolan Crain took the pitching loss for the Streaks. He threw three innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Herrin pitched two innings, allowing five more Rocky runs on three hits and Zach Ricketts finished the contest, pitching two innings and allowing three runs.
Tuesday, the Streaks will try to rebound with a non-conference game at Morton.
Seven-run inning powers Streaks past Pekin 10-0
4/13 - A walk-off two-run homer by A.J. Fields gave GHS' varsity baseball team a 10-0 five-inning victory over Pekin, here Thursday.
With the non-conference win, the Streaks moved their season record to 6-5, heading into
Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader at home against Rock Island.
Through the first three innings, it did not look like it was going to be a run-shortened game, in fact the contest was scoreless. GHS finally broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two out, Cory Myler drew a walk. Ben Ascher followed with a single and Tyler Leihenseder walked to load the bases. Mike Nichols then doubled to ignite the rally.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pekin could not get out of the inning. A Chad Humes single led things off. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and Chris "Kong" Elliott singled Humes in. A hit batter and another walk set the table for
Leihenseder's two-out, two-run single. An error on Nichols' fly ball to center brought in pair of runs and Fields followed the walk-off "dinger".
Kyle Krisher enjoyed the offensive support as he picked up the pitching victory. He worked five inning, scattering six hits and striking out one.
GHS managed eight hits in the contest. Leihenseder and Humes had two apiece. Nichols, Fields, Elliott and Ascher chipped in one each.
Streaks top Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon 8-3
4/11 - Tuesday's non-conference game against Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon gave some of GHS' varsity baseball players, who hadn't seen extensive action this season, a chance to show their stuff. The reserves responded with an 8-3 victory at Sundberg Field.
Chris "Kong" Elliott and Zach Ricketts both went deep to power the Streak offense and Ryan
Painter went four strong innings on the mound to pick up the win. Tuesday's game was also a "get away" game for GHS' players as they left with their coaches after the contest for Chicago to take in Wednesday's Cub game.
With two out in the bottom of the first inning, Corey Clay singled and Elliott followed with a thunderous homerun into the trees behind the Sundberg Field outfield fence. The Streaks pushed their lead to
