New tennis courts
for GHS |
It took some time to get the project
approved, but a new eight-court tennis complex will be built
on the GHS campus during the summer of 2006 to replace the
complex built in the early '70s.
In the spring of 2005, GHS
stopped using the current courts for match play and took the
tennis program "on the road". Repairs to the courts were
made in the summer of 2004, but did not last the winter. At
that point, it was decided no further repairs would be made
to the courts just east of the football field.
Also in the spring
of 2005, the boys tennis team had only one home meet (at
Lakeside) and this past year both the girls and boys' teams
have played a limited "home" |

schedule at Lakeside, Knox College and Monmouth
College.
When the City of Galesburg
agreed to pay their portion of the construction costs for the
$600,000-plus complex, the work began. It is hoped
the new courts will be ready for use in August or early September
- in time for most
the GHS girls' season. If construction delays move completion into
September, some early meets will be played at the Knox College
facility.
The new GHS tenniscomplex will
be south of the football field. It will be constructed with a
sophisticated drainage system and high tension concrete to
minimize cracking. In a attempt to control costs, the project will
be scaled down to eight courts, instead of ten. Only three courts
will be lit. Still, the complex should more than meet the needs of
the high school and community. |
